In a groundbreaking development, Neuralink, the brain-chip startup founded by billionaire Elon Musk, announced on Sunday that it had successfully implanted its first brain computer interface (BCI) device into a human patient. Elon Musk confirmed the news on his social media platform, X, stating that the recipient is currently recovering well.

Elon Musk expressed optimism about the initial results, revealing that the implanted device showed promising neuron spike detection. Neuron spikes are activities generated by neurons, which are cells responsible for transmitting information through electrical and chemical signals within the brain and to the rest of the body, according to the National Institute of Health.

The milestone follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s clearance granted to Neuralink last year, allowing the company to initiate its first human trial. This clearance was crucial for Neuralink’s overarching goal of developing technology to assist individuals in overcoming paralysis and various neurological conditions.

Implant the BCI in a specific region of the brain computer interface

Neuralink had previously received approval in September to begin recruiting participants for the human trial. The study involves the use of a robotic system to surgically implant the BCI in a specific region of the brain responsible for controlling movement intentions. Neuralink’s primary objective is to empower individuals to control a computer cursor or keyboard solely through their thoughts. The ultra-fine threads incorporated in the implants facilitate the transmission of signals within the participants’ brains.

Elon Musk disclosed that the first product resulting from Neuralink’s efforts would be named “Telepathy,” marking a significant step forward in the field of brain computer interfaces.

The ongoing PRIME Study by Neuralink serves as a trial for its wireless brain computer interface, focusing on evaluating the safety of both the implant and the surgical robot utilized in the procedure. Despite the successful implantation, Neuralink has yet to respond to requests for additional details, including queries from Reuters.

Underscoring the continued interest and investment

The company has faced increasing scrutiny regarding its safety protocols, with reports earlier this month stating that Neuralink was fined for violating U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rules about the transportation of hazardous materials. In late November, four lawmakers urged the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate whether Elon Musk misled investors about the safety of Neuralink’s technology. The request was prompted by veterinary records revealing issues with implanted devices in monkeys, leading to problems such as paralysis, seizures, and brain swelling.

Addressing concerns, Musk asserted on September 10 in a social media post that no monkeys had died as a result of Neuralink implants. He explained that the company intentionally selected “terminal” monkeys to minimize risks to healthier ones. Despite these challenges, Neuralink’s valuation reached approximately $5 billion in June, underscoring the continued interest and investment in the potential of brain-chip technology.
