The Wall Street Journal recently investigated the inappropriate content delivered by Instagram’s Reels video service to users interested in children. To assess the platform’s response, the Journal set up test accounts that followed profiles of young gymnasts, cheerleaders, and teen and preteen influencers.
The outcome, as reported by the Journal, was unsettling. Instagram’s system delivered disconcerting doses of salacious content to the test accounts, including explicit footage of children and overtly sexual adult videos. What added to the concern was the inclusion of advertisements for some of the largest U.S. brands alongside this inappropriate content.

The Journal’s findings revealed a significant demographic skew among the followers of these popular accounts, with a substantial number being adult men. Moreover, the investigation discovered that many of these accounts not only followed children but also exhibited an interest in sexually explicit inappropriate content related to both children and adults. Following these accounts led to an escalation in exposure to more disturbing content and advertisements.
In a parallel investigation, The Canadian Centre for Child Protection conducted its own tests and reported comparable results, underscoring the potentially widespread nature of the issue on the platform.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, responded to the Journal’s investigation by asserting that the tests created a manufactured experience that does not accurately represent the content encountered by the billions of users on their platform. Although Meta refrained from providing a specific explanation for the algorithm’s compilation of videos featuring children, sex, and advertisements, the company did mention introducing new brand safety tools in October. These tools purportedly grant advertisers greater control over the placement of their ads. Additionally, Instagram claimed to remove or reduce the visibility of four million videos suspected of violating its standards each month.
Highlighted the long-term traumatic effects
In response to the revelations, several companies, including major dating app platforms Match and Bumble, announced the suspension of their advertisements on Instagram Reels. The Journal’s investigation disclosed that these companies’ ads were being displayed alongside sexually inappropriate videos featuring children, prompting swift action.
