Lockdown is underway in various countries around the world to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. This means that people are imprisoned in their own homes. You may also be working or chatting with friends, but video calls are now a part of your daily life.

Focusing on the growing use of video calls, Facebook has introduced a number of new features to WhatsApp, Messenger, and their flagship apps. With Facebook’s ‘Messenger Rooms‘, up to 50 people can now start and participate in group video chats. However, Facebook said that it has also worked with cryptographers to ensure that strangers or unexpected people do not come into these video chats.

The feature is currently being rolled out to some users in the UK and will be rolled out to all Facebook users in the next few weeks. But they are about to make these features available worldwide soon due to the lockdown caused by the Coronavirus.

Facebook says video calling on Messenger has doubled over the past year. The prevalence is higher in areas where coronavirus infection is high. Facebook’s rival Zoom app had 300 million users in April. The app was downloaded more than 2 million times in early March after people were instructed to stay at home in major US cities.

Apps like Microsoft Teams have also made some of their premium features available for free during this time.

Mark Zuckerberg has announced these new messenger rooms of Facebook through a blog post. People can join or exit this video chat as long as a messenger room is open.

These rooms can be created through Facebook or Messenger. The company also said that it plans to roll out these features on Instagram and WhatsApp soon. The creators of these messenger rooms will have the option to keep them private, meaning that only expected people can participate in these video chats and even those who are not on Facebook can participate.
