Microsoft’s New FAQ Feature Aims to Educate Users
Microsoft is working on a new Windows 11 feature designed to help users understand how their hardware impacts system performance. This update, currently being tested in preview builds, includes a frequently asked questions (FAQ) section within the system settings. The FAQ provides explanations about the role of GPU memory, system RAM, and operating system versions in overall PC performance.
The discovery of this new feature was made by a Windows insider known as phantomofearth, who found it hidden in the latest Dev Channel build of Windows 11. Microsoft has yet to officially announce the feature, and it is not currently enabled by default. Users must manually activate it within the preview builds.
This addition aims to clarify performance issues for users who may not be well-versed in hardware specifications. For example, if a system has insufficient RAM or a GPU with less than 4GB of memory, the FAQ will provide recommendations and insights into how these limitations affect performance. Additionally, if a user is running an outdated version of Windows 11, the FAQ will flag this as a potential factor impacting system efficiency.
How the FAQ Might Work in Windows 11
It remains unclear how dynamic this new FAQ feature will be. It could provide static responses based solely on the user’s hardware configuration, or it might dynamically adapt to different systems and their specifications. A high-end system running the latest OS version may not display any FAQs at all, while older or lower-end systems might see more guidance and recommendations.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has attempted to help users understand their system’s capabilities. In the past, Windows included a performance rating system called the Windows Experience Index, which first appeared in Windows Vista. This system assigned individual subscores to each component, such as RAM, processor, and graphics card, before calculating an overall rating to indicate how well a PC could run Windows. While this feature was eventually removed in later versions of Windows, the new FAQ feature could serve a similar purpose by providing users with a clearer understanding of their system’s limitations.
Possible Release in an Upcoming Windows 11 Update
Since the FAQ feature has appeared in the Dev Channel builds, it could be rolled out to all Windows 11 users in an upcoming update. Microsoft typically tests new features in these early builds before including them in major updates, such as the anticipated 24H2 update for Windows 11. However, not all features tested in the Dev Channel make it to the final release, as some are abandoned before an official rollout.
