The stage is set for the second Pro Tour of the year as The Gathering Final Fantasy Magic takes the spotlight at MagicCon: Las Vegas. The highly anticipated crossover set, Magic’s best-selling and first Universes Beyond expansion to release directly into Standard, launched just last week and will now be tested at the highest competitive level. The early rounds will focus on Limited Draft play, but all eyes will be on Standard Constructed for Sunday’s Top 8, where standout cards from FINAL FANTASY will battle alongside 14 other sets.

Despite tight deck space in an already refined meta led by the lightning-fast Izzet Prowess, the inevitability of Zur Overlords, and the intricate Azorius Omniscience combo decks some new additions from the FINAL FANTASY set are already making waves. A few select cards are not only making the cut but also threatening to reshape the format entirely.

Top Cards to Watch: Vivi and Beyond

Leading the charge is Vivi Ornitier, a beloved character from Final Fantasy Magic IX, now emerging as the most influential card in the format. Slotted comfortably into Izzet Prowess already considered the best deck in Standard, Vivi brings mid-game dominance with mana acceleration and scaling threats, bypassing traditional removal like Temporary Lockdown. His impact is being likened to iconic cards like Nadu and Tolarian Academy, raising expectations for his performance at the Pro Tour.

While Vivi has stolen the spotlight, other new additions are still holding value. Astrologian’s Planisphere, once a favorite for Izzet Prowess, remains relevant in some builds due to its synergy with +1/+1 counters and prowess mechanics. Opera Love Song provides added punch in Mono-Red Aggro and Gruul builds, offering flexibility as both a card draw engine and a source of surprise lethal damage.

Meanwhile, control and combo strategies have gained new tools. Mythic saga Summons are appearing in Azorius Omniscience decks, supplementing traditional finishers with versatile answers. Ultima, a powerful five-mana board wipe, has become a go-to for Azorius Control, punishing go-wide creature strategies and denying graveyard value. Yuna, another legendary inclusion, is gaining traction in enchantment-heavy builds, particularly as a synergy piece with Zur Overlords and Leyline Binding.

New Archetypes and Returning Legends Reshape Standard

The FINAL FANTASY set is also inspiring new archetypes. Cecil, Dark Knight offers hyper-aggressive one-mana tempo plays with a potential late-game payoff if transformed. His synergy with Dark Confidant, now reintroduced to Standard, forms the backbone of a budding Mono-Black Aggro archetype. This duo combines early pressure, card draw, and self-inflicted life loss mechanics to power rapid transformations and relentless attacks.

Other cards like Starting Town, a versatile multicolor land, are being adopted by color-intensive decks like Dimir Midrange and Jeskai Oculus, aiding early game consistency without painful drawbacks. While many of these cards are still being explored, their early showings in Magic Online Challenges and Regional Qualifiers suggest they may soon become Pro Tour staples.

The event kicks off at 2 PM/11 AM (PT) on Friday, streaming live on Magic’s official Twitch and YouTube channels. Fans are encouraged to tune in and watch these new Final Fantasy Magic cards in action and to see which ones rise to the top when the stakes are highest.
