The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a nationwide alert urging consumers to avoid certain packages of Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp sold at Walmart. The agency flagged the product as Potentially Radioactive Shrimp due to possible contamination with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, after traces were detected in shipping containers linked to an Indonesian supplier.
The recall affects three lot codes—8005540-1, 8005538-1, and 8005539-1—each marked with a best-by date of March 15, 2027. These products were distributed in at least 13 states, including Alabama, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania. Officials have directed consumers to discard or return the affected shrimp for a refund, emphasizing that eating the product could pose long-term health risks.
Investigation and Regulatory Response
The issue came to light after U.S. Customs and Border Protection detected radioactive material in shipping containers at several major ports, including Los Angeles, Houston, and Miami. Although no packaged shrimp sold in stores has yet tested above federal intervention limits, the FDA determined that the Potentially Radioactive Shrimp were prepared and stored under conditions that could allow contamination.
Laboratory tests on one sample of breaded shrimp revealed levels of Cesium-137 around 68 becquerels per kilogram—well below the FDA’s intervention threshold of 1,200 Bq/kg but high enough to raise concern over cumulative exposure. In response, the agency placed the Indonesian supplier of the Potentially Radioactive Shrimp on an import alert list, effectively blocking additional shipments until safety assurances are met. Authorities continue to coordinate with Walmart, customs officials, and regulators abroad to trace the contamination source and prevent further risk.
Health Concerns and Consumer Guidance
Health experts warn that while the detected levels are not immediately dangerous, prolonged or repeated exposure to Cesium-137 could increase the risk of cancer or other radiation-related illnesses. As a precaution, the FDA has urged consumers in the affected states to check packaging carefully and dispose of any Potentially Radioactive Shrimp bearing the listed lot codes.
Walmart has removed the identified products from shelves and restricted further sales while working with regulators to ensure compliance. Consumers uncertain about their purchases are encouraged to return the shrimp to stores for a refund. Medical professionals advise anyone concerned about potential exposure to seek guidance from healthcare providers.
