Toni Curtis: Making Every Birth a Safe, Supported, and Transformative Experience

Toni Curtis- Trainer & Educator | Consultant | BirthWise Doula Services LLC | The Enterprise World

Most people don’t realize how much the journey from trying to conceive, through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period, shapes a family’s health, confidence, and emotional well-being. Without the right support, this time can bring fear, confusion, preventable complications, and trauma that lingers for years.

According to the WHO, globally around 260,000 women die every year from pregnancy- or childbirth‑related causes, and thousands more suffer from complications that could have been prevented. Proper care, guidance, and emotional support aren’t luxuries — they’re lifesaving. Yet so often, this critical period is treated like it’s optional or “just part of having a baby.”

This is where Toni Curtis, Founder & Director of BirthWise Doula Services and Director of Advocacy at DONA International, steps in. steps in. A globally recognized and award-winning doula with over 30 years of experience, Toni works tirelessly to ensure families have safe, supported, and empowering experiences at every stage — from fertility and pregnancy to birth and postpartum. Her impact extends far beyond local communities, reaching families, professionals, and healthcare systems on an international scale.

Her guiding principle has always been, and will always be: “SAFE BIRTH FOR EVERYONE.” Toni Curtis provides emotional, physical, and educational guidance to parents navigating challenges like infertility, pregnancy complications, birth trauma, and postpartum adjustments. Beyond working directly with families, she trains and mentors doulas (birth support professionals), building a skilled workforce that delivers culturally sensitive, holistic care.

Through her advocacy, she expands access to doula services, influences maternal health policies, and helps create sustainable systems for equitable birth support. Her work has gained international recognition for advancing maternal health and advocacy, positioning her as a leading voice in the global birth support movement.

Through BirthWise Doula Services, she has supported over 1,000 families and attended more than 500 births, demonstrating significant improvements in birth outcomes and meaningful empowerment for families and birth workers.

The Lasting Influence of Love and Loss at Age Fourteen

Toni Curtis- Trainer & Educator | Consultant | BirthWise Doula Services LLC | The Enterprise World

Toni’s journey in maternal and reproductive health began with a deeply personal experience of love and loss. At just fourteen, the death of her baby brother left a lasting impact, shaping her understanding of the profound need for guidance, advocacy, and compassionate support for families during their most vulnerable moments. By the mid-1990s, she became a certified peer educator, helping teens with reproductive health education and safe sex awareness during the HIV/AIDS crisis. At fifteen, she attended her first birth—not as a professional, but as a young person offering presence, care, and support. Although she did not yet know the term “doula,” she understood the importance of listening, protecting, and holding space.

Her journey became even more personal as she faced infertility, misdiagnoses, miscarriages, and eventual motherhood. Through multiple failed IUI and IVF attempts and challenges from hypothyroidism, she learned to advocate for her own body. Studying physiology, nutrition, epigenetics, and traditional healing practices, Toni came to understand that healing is not linear—it is relational, emotional, ancestral, and spiritual. When she finally conceived her daughter through IVF and her son naturally thirteen months later, her understanding of birth and maternal care deepened profoundly.

For Toni, birth work was not something she chose—it chose her, guiding her into a lifelong mission of supporting families and shaping the future of maternal care.

Every Life Touched and Safely Guided

Impact is not only measured in numbers — it is measured in transformation.

Toni Curtis believes that meaningful change is when:

  • A birthing person leaves their experience feeling heard, respected, and empowered.
  • A birth support professional gains the confidence and mentorship needed to thrive.
  • A community begins to trust birth again.
  • A system starts to shift toward cultural humility and truly patient-centered care.

She emphasizes that real impact is felt in every life touched, every birth safely guided, and every community that regains trust and strength.

Early Parenting and Newborn Care

Toni’s most influential work is the creation of BirthWise, a full-spectrum perinatal health and training ecosystem that supports families through fertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, lactation, and early parenting. BirthWise serves as a sanctuary for families and a professional development space for birth support professionals.

Equally, her work as Director of Advocacy for DONA International allows her to advocate on a global scale — strengthening pathways for birth support professionals, promoting equitable reimbursement, advancing culturally relevant care, and uplifting BIPOC birthworkers through mentorship and access.

Toni Curtis’s legacy is:

  • Birth is sacred.
  • Families deserve dignity.
  • Communities deserve care.
  • Birth support professionals are essential.

Strategic Partnerships for the Birth Support Workforce

Toni leads with lived experience — personal, clinical, community, and ancestral. This grounding shapes how she shows up in every space she serves. She guides committees focused on insurance access, legislative engagement, equity, and strengthening public understanding of birth support care. Through this work, she builds strong partnerships with hospitals, policymakers, academic institutions, coalitions, and grassroots organizations to advance sustainable and community-centered birth support workforce systems.

As part of her commitment to expanding access and strengthening the field, Toni is leading the growth of the Physiological Birth Practitioners Program, along with statewide collaborations designed to uplift and equip the birth support workforce. These efforts now include global collaborations and partnerships designed to strengthen the birth support workforce internationally.

Her mentorship pipeline now spans internationally, supported by a global scholarship program that creates access for the next generation of doulas — particularly those from historically underserved communities. Through this work, she is not only building careers but shaping future leaders in maternal health worldwide.

These efforts focus on:

  • Traditional healing knowledge
  • Pelvic and movement-based birth support
  • Lactation access equity
  • Fertility and reproductive wellness care navigation
  • Trauma-informed leadership development for birth support professionals

Through these initiatives, she is building systems that honor scientific evidence while preserving invaluable ancestral wisdom.

Her leadership approach is strategic and relational:

  • Listen first.
  • Build trust.
  • Move with intention.
  • Protect the community while entering policy spaces.

To Toni Curtis, advocacy is not simply about speaking — it is about ensuring others are heard.

Even with her policy responsibilities, she remains accessible and deeply connected to the work on the ground. She teaches, mentors, and continues to be present in the birth room, allowing her to bring real-life bedside experience into every policy decision she makes. For Toni, effective leadership must stay close to the communities it serves — and her work reflects this philosophy at every level.

Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities

Toni shares the most pressing challenges in maternal healthcare today, reminding us that behind every statistic is a family navigating fear, uncertainty, or preventable risk.

Maternal healthcare today faces several urgent challenges: racial and socioeconomic disparities in outcomes, limited access to culturally responsive and community-based care, insufficient compensation for birth support professionals, and a system that often over-relies on medical interventions. These gaps contribute to birth trauma and a generational loss of trust in care — especially in communities that have been historically ignored or underserved.

To Toni Curtis, the path forward is clear: relationship-centered, culturally rooted, and collaborative care that honors families, strengthens birthworkers, and rebuilds trust in the system from the inside out.

The Black Mother & Baby Subcommittee and IMPACT Scholarship

Toni has used her platform at DONA to advance birth equity, doula care, and maternal health advocacy through initiatives like the Black Mother & Baby Subcommittee and the IMPACT Scholarship Program.

Through these efforts, she has:

  • Increased access to training and certification for BIPOC birth support professionals.
  • Built mentorship pipelines that support birthworkers in achieving long-term professional success.
  • Supported members in gaining national speaking invitations, leadership roles, and collaborative research opportunities.
  • Partnered with organizations that prioritize equity, cultural humility, and trauma-informed care.

Her work focuses on creating real, structural change, not just symbolic efforts.

Motivation from Children, Community, and Ancestors

When asked about her motivation, Toni Curtis shares:

“My children, my community, my ancestors, and the families who trust me.”

She stays grounded through prayer, rest, bodywork, journaling, and community support. Toni does not carry this work alone — she carries it with those who came before her and those who will continue after her.

Vision For Next 5–10 Years

Toni sees her work growing into a national force for education, training, and community wellness over the next 5–10 years. She envisions this expanding into a global force for education, training, and holistic perinatal care. An exciting part of this next chapter is her upcoming book, Beyond Depletion: A 42-Day Postpartum Recovery Guide, which aims to provide structured, compassionate, and practical postpartum support for families. She also envisions BirthWise becoming a full-scale institute that offers advanced training, mentorship programs, certification pathways, and holistic perinatal health education. Her goal is to uplift and empower birthworkers—especially those who have been historically overlooked—so they can step into leadership, build sustainable careers, and shape the future of maternal health. For Toni, this next chapter is about creating long-lasting systems and a meaningful legacy that will continue to support families and birthworkers for generations to come.

Every Action Must Honor Humanity

Toni describes her leadership philosophy as a balance of compassion, courage, and deep purpose. To her, leadership isn’t about directing outcomes — it’s about creating the conditions where real transformation can happen. She leads with a soft heart and a powerful presence, guided by integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to protect what is sacred in birth and community care.

She believes leadership must be human first. That means choosing legacy over recognition, community over ego, and healing over hierarchy. It means standing in the gap when others cannot, speaking up when silence feels safer, and nurturing people while still boldly challenging systems that cause harm.

At the core of her philosophy is one grounding truth: every action must honor humanity. Every decision must uplift. Every step must leave people and communities stronger, safer, and more seen.

Her mission is clear — protect birth, restore dignity, expand access, and leave the world more whole than she found it.

Open Letter to the Next Generation of Future Leaders

Dear Future Leaders,

“Don’t rush your growth. Leadership, especially in birth work and advocacy, is sacred and unfolds over time. Real impact takes patience, and healing — for yourself and those you serve — happens in layers. I want you to know that you don’t need to have everything figured out or mastered right away. Your voice, your presence, and your heart already matter.

Stay connected to your community, honor the mentors who guide you, and trust the wisdom of your own body and instincts. Let compassion lead every decision, and remember that true leadership is not about perfection — it’s about showing up fully, with courage, care, and humanity.”

With strength and belief in you,
Toni Curtis, Founder & Director; Director of Advocacy
