Brett Richards: Turning Mining Opportunities into Long-Term Business Success

Brett Richards- Turning Mining into Business Success | Zodiac Gold | The Enterprise World

“Great opportunities are built on great decisions.”

Mining is about much more than discovering valuable minerals. Discovering valuable minerals is just the beginning. Turning those discoveries into thriving operations requires strong leadership, sound strategy, and the ability to manage risk in unpredictable environments. Without experienced leaders, promising projects can face delays, rising costs, and lost opportunities, making it difficult to create lasting value for investors, employees, and communities.

As Chairman of Zodiac Gold, Brett Richards has built a career around turning complex mining opportunities into successful businesses. A Mining Executive, Investor, and Entrepreneur with more than 40 years of experience, he has led mining ventures across Africa and beyond, helping companies grow through strategic leadership, disciplined decision-making, and long-term value creation.

His successful leadership of companies such as Katanga Mining, Banro Corporation, Avocet Mining, Octea Group, Midnight Sun Mining, Goldshore Resources (Gold X2), and Pasofino Gold has delivered strong shareholder returns while earning him a reputation for navigating some of the mining industry’s most demanding environments.

Today, through his leadership at Zodiac Gold, Richards Enterprises Inc., and other mining ventures, he continues to drive responsible growth, build high-performing teams, and create opportunities that shape the future of the industry.

The foundation of a global mining leader

Brett Richards’s journey into the mining industry began with a strong academic foundation. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering, completed postgraduate studies in mining engineering, and later obtained a Master of Business Education from Cornell University. This combination of technical expertise and business knowledge prepared him to take on leadership roles in one of the world’s most demanding industries.

A significant turning point came in 2002 when he joined Kinross Gold. The experience broadened his understanding of the mining business and opened the door to new entrepreneurial opportunities across senior and junior mining companies. Over the years, he expanded his career by serving as a CEO, director, and strategic investor for companies listed on the LSE, AIM, TSX, TSXV, and NYSE.

Another defining milestone came in 2005 when Richards became one of the founders of Katanga Mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project marked the beginning of his long-term involvement in Africa’s mining sector and provided valuable experience in leading projects across diverse and often challenging operating environments. These experiences shaped his leadership style, strengthened his strategic thinking, and laid the foundation for the roles and responsibilities he continues to undertake today.

Two decades of mining project experience across Africa

Over the past two decades, Brett Richards has led and invested in numerous mining projects, with most of them based across Africa. Except for the launch of Goldshore Resources (now Gold X2) in Thunder Bay, Ontario, nearly all of his recent ventures have been in countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Zambia, Burkina Faso, Mali, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, and Liberia.

Working in these regions has meant operating in some of the world’s most challenging environments. During his time in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he faced serious security threats, including rebel attacks, hostage situations, and the constant need to avoid potential ambushes. These experiences tested his leadership and his ability to make sound decisions under extreme pressure.

Years of working across developing mining jurisdictions have given Richards a deep understanding of the social, political, and regulatory challenges that can influence business operations. They have also shaped his approach to leadership, reinforcing the importance of carefully managing risk while identifying new opportunities. His decision-making is guided by safety, integrity, accountability, and a commitment to protecting the interests of employees, investors, communities, and other stakeholders.

A career-defining moment

One of the most defining moments in Brett Richards’s career came in 2019 while serving at Banro Corporation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. During a serious security crisis, several expatriates and employees were taken hostage by rebel groups and held for ransom. The situation demanded far more than operational or financial decision-making. Every decision had to prioritize the safety of people while ensuring the organization could continue to move forward.

Throughout his career, Brett has also faced security threats and personal detention in regions where corruption created significant challenges. These experiences changed the way he viewed leadership. They reinforced his belief that, in the most difficult situations, leaders must stay calm, act with integrity, make thoughtful decisions under pressure, and always put people first. For Brett, protecting lives and doing what is right will always be more important than any business outcome.

Five core principles behind Brett’s career legacy

Brett Richards believes that a few key principles have consistently driven organizational success throughout his career:

  1. Maintaining discipline and staying committed to the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
  2. Leading by example through clear and open communication.
  3. Making decisive decisions while listening to the ideas and perspectives of others.
  4. Demonstrating resolve and resilience in the face of challenges.
  5. Leading with emotional intelligence and showing respect for all stakeholders.

Success cannot be measured by numbers alone

For Brett, success cannot be measured by numbers alone. Higher production, lower costs, stronger margins, greater efficiency, and increased revenue are all important indicators of business performance, especially in the mining industry. However, he believes these results tell only part of the story. As commodity markets rise and fall, companies often face their greatest challenges during difficult market conditions, making steady leadership more valuable than ever.

While delivering strong business outcomes remains a priority, Brett Richards considers one of his greatest achievements to be developing people. Throughout his career, he has focused on identifying talented individuals, providing them with opportunities to grow, and preparing them to take on leadership roles. Watching employees and community leaders build successful careers and step forward to lead the next generation of mining professionals has been one of the most rewarding parts of his journey.

He believes that investing in people creates a lasting impact that extends far beyond financial performance. By nurturing future leaders and encouraging them to learn from the experiences of previous generations, Brett is helping build a stronger, more sustainable mining industry. For him, the true measure of success is what a company achieves today and the capable leaders it leaves behind for tomorrow.

Brett Richards built the foundation of his career by closely observing successful leaders and learning from their experiences. Throughout his education and professional journey, he paid attention to the qualities, decisions, and work habits that helped individuals and organizations succeed. While he adopted many of these proven practices, he also developed his leadership style, combining those lessons with his personal values, perspective, and approach. This balance of learning from others while staying true to himself has played a key role in shaping the leader he is today.
