Dr. Sharon Spano: Helping Leaders Turn Strategy into Sustainable Execution

Dr. Sharon Spano: Strategy into Execution | Spano & Company, Inc. | The Enterprise World

Why do so many well-planned strategies fail in execution?

Not because the plan is wrong, but because people, priorities, and systems are not fully aligned. Without the right support, this often leads to slow decisions, confusion within teams, weak accountability, and missed goals, gradually affecting trust and overall performance.

This is where deeper leadership and strategic work becomes essential. Sustainable execution rarely fails because of strategy alone. More often, it breaks down through misalignment, unclear communication, unresolved tension, and the unseen human dynamics that influence how leaders think, decide, and work together. Addressing those dynamics allows organizations to move beyond one-time planning toward stronger alignment, disciplined execution, and healthier leadership cultures.

Dr. Sharon Spano, Executive Coach, Business Strategist, and Summit OS Facilitator at Spano & Company, Inc., brings this approach to life by working at the intersection of leadership, strategy, and human behavior. She helps CEOs and executive teams move beyond surface-level problem-solving by uncovering the hidden patterns and system dynamics that often hold performance back.

Key areas she focuses on include:

Under her expertise, company leaders learn to integrate strategy with human development, enabling the organization to move beyond one-time planning to  disciplined execution and  strengthened  leadership capacity.

The Spark of Curiosity

Dr. Sharon’s journey into executive coaching and business strategy began with a deep curiosity about people and organizational systems rather than a formal role. Early in her career, she noticed that success was not driven by strategy alone but by factors such as leadership capacity, communication, trust, and the unseen dynamics that influence decision-making. This realization shaped her early thinking and direction.

Over time, she became increasingly drawn to deeper questions: Why do highly capable leaders still get stuck? Why do intelligent organizations repeat the same unproductive patterns? What drives human behavior under pressure? This led her to pursue a PhD in Human and Organizational Systems, which marked a turning point in her career. She began focusing less on surface-level problems and more on the deeper patterns that drive results. Over time, her work evolved into executive coaching, organizational and leadership development, and strategic planning facilitation.

Another defining moment came when she realized that many successful leaders were quietly paying a high personal price for success. On the outside, they appeared accomplished. Internally, many were navigating burnout, disconnection, strained relationships, pressure, or the feeling that success itself was no longer enough. This reinforced her belief that leadership development must support both performance and the individual. Today, she helps leaders align priorities, strengthen accountability, and turn strategy into consistent execution.

Owning a Unique Vision

Dr. Sharon experienced several phases of reinvention and uncertainty throughout her journey, where she often had to rely on inner clarity before results became visible. One of the most challenging aspects was fully owning the depth and uniqueness of her work. In a highly competitive executive coaching space, there was constant pressure to simplify her approach into something more conventional. However, she understood that real leadership challenges require a deeper, more integrated approach that addresses systems, mindset, emotional patterns, development, and strategy.

Choosing that path was not always easy, because deeper work is not always the fastest sell. There were moments when she had to choose between fitting neatly into a category or standing firmly in the truth of what she believed created real transformation. She often faced the choice between fitting into familiar categories or staying true to what she believed created lasting transformation. These experiences taught her that clarity matters more than certainty, and even without a perfect roadmap, moving forward with purpose is essential.

She also learned that resilience is not about pushing harder but about staying grounded, adapting to change, and continuing to evolve without losing core values. Most importantly, her journey reinforced that leadership begins with self leadership, and guiding others through complexity requires doing that inner work first.

Solving the Challenges Leaders Often Overlook

Dr. Sharon focuses on solving problems that are often not visible on reports or dashboards. While many leaders initially believe their challenges are operational, Dr. Sharon often finds the deeper issues rooted in behavior, relationships, leadership blind spots, and the hidden dynamics shaping the organization itself. What looks like poor execution or slow decisions is often driven by unclear priorities, weak communication, leadership blind spots, or unresolved tension within teams.

She believes executive development is often misunderstood as a matter of adding more tools or techniques. In reality, even highly experienced leaders can remain limited by unconscious patterns that affect how they listen, delegate, handle conflict, build trust, or think strategically under pressure. Even experienced leaders may be influenced by unconscious patterns that affect how they communicate, handle conflict, and build trust. Her work helps leaders uncover these hidden patterns so they can strengthen strategic clarity, improve alignment, and understand how their behavior shapes the organization. She also supports businesses in treating strategy as an ongoing discipline, ensuring consistent execution and long-term results.

Where Strategy and People Come Together

What sets Dr. Sharon apart is her ability to bring business strategy and human development together instead of treating them separately. She sees every leadership challenge as part of a larger human system. While she helps leaders improve execution, decision making, and team performance, she also focuses on the beliefs, habits, and relationships that shape these results.

Her approach combines different perspectives like human development, systems thinking, coaching, and strategy. This helps her look beyond what leaders do and understand how they think, where they feel stuck, and how their environment influences their actions. In practice, she connects strategy with self-awareness, helping leaders notice behaviors that affect trust, communication, and alignment. This deeper understanding leads to real change, allowing leaders to grow, improve their impact, and build long term success.

Success Story

One real impact story of Spano & Company involved a highly capable leader who was respected for his intelligence and strong work ethic but struggled with ongoing conflict in key relationships. He believed he was being direct and focused on high standards, yet others experienced him as rigid and difficult to work with.

The focus was not to change his strengths, but to help him understand the deeper patterns shaping his behavior. As he developed greater self-awareness, he began to listen more openly, communicate with clarity, and respond with greater flexibility. Over time, he became more approachable and effective in handling important conversations.

This shift led to stronger trust, reduced tension, and better collaboration within his team. What made the change meaningful was that it went beyond surface-level adjustments. It reshaped how he saw himself and others, creating a lasting impact on his leadership style and the overall work environment.

A Safe Space for High-Stakes Conversations

Trust is at the core of Dr. Sharon’s work. She believes that without trust, there can be no real coaching, honest strategic conversations, or meaningful transformation. To establish this, she begins by setting clear agreements around scope, roles, confidentiality, and expectations. When working with executives within a larger organization, she carefully balances what remains private in the coaching relationship and what can be shared to support the broader goals, ensuring the individual and the integrity of the process are protected.

She approaches her work with a strong sense of ethical responsibility, recognizing that insight alone is not enough. It requires maturity to handle complex situations without taking advantage of vulnerability or crossing professional boundaries. Her approach is designed to challenge leaders thoughtfully and respectfully, helping them grow without creating unnecessary pressure or discomfort.

Given the sensitive nature of leadership challenges and organizational dynamics, she maintains a high level of discretion. This allows clients to speak openly while staying accountable for turning insights into meaningful action. Over time, trust is strengthened through consistency, careful judgment, and mutual respect, creating a space where individuals and organizations can grow with confidence.

Before / After Leadership Journey

Before Leadership Journey

Before her leadership journey, Dr. Sharon was driven to achieve while searching for meaning and belonging. Growing up in a divorced family, she often felt isolated, which led her to work in children’s homes, nursing homes, and hospitals. These early experiences, along with raising a child with a rare metabolic disorder, exposed her to the complexity of systems and gaps in support, shaping her understanding of how systems impact people.

After the Leadership Journey

After her leadership journey, Dr. Sharon’s work expanded into complex organizational systems across North America, where she recognized the need for strong leadership and organizational development. She gained deeper insight into how human behavior influences performance, and through her work in adult human development, developed a structured approach to leadership. Today, she combines real-life experience with strategic understanding to identify challenges and support meaningful, lasting change within organizations.

Advise for Future CEOs and Emerging Leaders

Dr. Sharon advises that future leaders should not confuse external success with true inner mastery. A person can build a successful business and earn respect, yet still be guided by patterns they may not fully understand. She believes that personal experiences, including past challenges, deserve attention since they often shape how leaders think, act, and make decisions.

In her view, leadership is not related to driving results or expanding influence. It is about developing the ability to think clearly, communicate honestly, listen with intent, and lead with a strong sense of self. She encourages leaders to invest in self-awareness early on so that they develop the ability to question their own assumptions and further understand how their behavior impacts others. She also highlights that leadership development extends beyond the individual. It influences teams, relationships, and the broader culture of an organization. According to her, the most effective leaders are not those who claim to have all the answers, but those who remain open, continue learning, and are willing to grow over time.
