For many educators, music is a discipline centered on mastering technique, reading notation, and delivering polished performances. For Ellyses Kuan, however, music has always represented something much greater. It is a language of connection, a vehicle for personal growth, and a lifelong catalyst for building stronger communities. Throughout her career, she has remained steadfast in the belief that exceptional music education should nurture not only accomplished performers but also confident leaders, empathetic individuals, and responsible citizens.
As the Owner and Music Director of EKS Music School in Quincy, Massachusetts, Ellyses Kuan has transformed that philosophy into a thriving educational institution serving over 1000 students and hundreds of families in the Greater Boston Area over the years. Since its founding, the school has become known not merely for producing award-winning musicians, but for cultivating an environment where collaboration outweighs competition, kindness complements excellence, and every student is encouraged to discover how their talents can positively influence others.
Her journey reflects the evolution of an educator who embraced entrepreneurship not simply to build a successful music school, but to redefine what meaningful music education can achieve.
Creating More Than a Music School
EKS Music School was founded in 2014 with a vision to become more than a place for music lessons. Ellyses established the school to create a community where students could grow not only as musicians but also as leaders and compassionate individuals.
Before launching EKS Music School, she gained valuable experience in music education from multiple perspectives. She worked in the academic libraries at Noble and Greenough School and Harvard University, taught students of all ages, and continues to perform as a collaborative pianist and as one half of Duo Amie, a piano-cello duo. These experiences reinforced her belief that music is more than a subject to study; it is a powerful way to connect people, inspire learning, and strengthen communities.
Like many entrepreneurs, Ellyses took on every responsibility in the early years of the business, serving as teacher, administrator, marketer, event planner, and business owner. The greatest challenge was not simply growing the school but earning the trust of families while building a culture where excellence, kindness, and collaboration are equally valued. More than a decade later, that founding vision continues to guide every lesson, recital, and program offered at EKS Music School.

Leadership Begins with Culture
Ellyses Kuan identifies one lesson that fundamentally reshaped her leadership philosophy: sustainable success is built on culture rather than expansion alone.
As EKS Music School grew, she realized that effective leadership extends beyond personal expertise. It requires empowering others, developing shared purpose, and creating an environment where teachers, students, and families feel genuinely connected.
This perspective has also been strengthened through her extensive leadership within the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association (MMTA). Having served as President and now continuing as Webmaster and Archivist, Ellyses has collaborated with educators across Massachusetts to advance music education beyond the walls of her own institution.
These experiences reinforced a broader understanding of leadership. Rather than focusing solely on individual achievement, she views leadership as service, fostering opportunities that strengthen educational communities and create lasting value for future generations of musicians.
Her professional journey illustrates that meaningful leadership is measured not only by organizational growth, but also by the positive impact created through collaboration and shared purpose.

The Modern Music Learning Experience
At EKS Music School, learning is intentionally designed to extend far beyond weekly private lessons. Students engage in a wide range of enriching experiences, including group classes, masterclasses, chamber music, camps, outreach performances, community events, and collaborative projects that encourage them to learn from and inspire one another.
The school’s culture is rooted in collaboration rather than competition, fostering an environment where kindness, generosity, teamwork, and leadership are valued just as highly as musical achievement. This holistic approach ensures that students develop not only as skilled musicians but also as compassionate individuals who recognize the importance of giving back through music.
This commitment is further reflected in the school’s current annual theme, Community Service, which encourages every student to use their musical talents to make a meaningful and positive impact beyond the classroom.

Recognition That Reflects Service and Excellence
Since its establishment in 2014, EKS Music School has grown into a thriving musical community, serving over 1000 students over the years through a diverse range of instruments and educational programs. Under Ellyses’ leadership, the school has cultivated an environment where students consistently achieve outstanding results in RCM examinations, competitions, scholarships, and auditions while developing lasting confidence and a genuine passion for music.
For Ellyses, the school’s greatest achievement extends beyond academic and musical success. She takes the greatest pride in the enduring relationships built with students and their families, many of whom have remained part of the EKS community for years. Watching students grow up, then return as mentors, volunteers, or accomplished young adults, stands as the most meaningful reflection of the school’s lasting impact and success.

The Power of a Supportive Learning Community
Quality begins with people, which is why Ellyses Kuan carefully selects faculty who share the school’s educational philosophy and commitment to student-centered learning.
While every teacher brings their own expertise and personality, they work together toward a common mission of excellence, integrity, and genuine care for every student.
To maintain quality and consistency, the school emphasizes clear communication with families, provides structured learning goals, and encourages collaboration among its faculty.
By fostering a positive and supportive environment, Ellyses ensures that students feel safe taking musical risks while developing confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

The Future of Music Education Starts Here
Ellyses Kuan believes music education is evolving beyond simply teaching performance skills to developing well-rounded individuals. She recognizes that today’s families are seeking learning environments that cultivate creativity, confidence, communication, collaboration, and character alongside musical excellence.
At EKS Music School, she has embraced this vision by creating meaningful performance opportunities, collaborative learning experiences, and service projects that connect music with real-life impact. Through this holistic approach, her goal is to prepare students not only to perform confidently on stage but also to become thoughtful leaders within their communities.
A Vision for Music Education Beyond Excellence
Looking ahead, Ellyses Kuan believes the future of music education is not simply about producing exceptional musicians but about developing compassionate individuals who use their talents to make a positive difference in the lives of others, which in the era of AI is essential and imperative. Through EKS Music School, she has remained committed to building a community where students inspire one another, families feel connected, and teachers work together toward a shared purpose.
For the coming school year, EKS Music School’s theme is Community Service, encouraging every student to discover how music can become a meaningful gift to others. Ellyses hopes that every graduate will be remembered not only for their musical excellence but also for how they used their music to serve, connect, and enrich their communities. She believes that if EKS Music School helps shape both outstanding musicians and thoughtful, generous citizens, then it has truly fulfilled its mission.

An Open Letter to Aspiring Music Educators
Dear Aspiring Music Educators,
Remember that we teach people, not just music. Every lesson is an opportunity to build confidence, inspire curiosity, and shape character. Success is not measured only by performances or awards, but by the positive impact we have on our students’ lives. Build a community where kindness, collaboration, and excellence go hand in hand. When we lead with passion, integrity, and a genuine desire to serve others, we help students become not only better musicians, but also better people.
Don’t be afraid to take on different roles early in your career. Whether it’s teaching, accompanying, performing, organizing events, or handling administrative work, every opportunity helps build skills that will serve you in the future. Look beyond the job in front of you and focus on the bigger picture. Every experience is preparing you to become a more versatile leader.
With best wishes,
Ellyses Kuan
