As digital threats grow alongside technological advancement, the convergence of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity has become essential for businesses, governments, and individuals alike. Leaders at this intersection do more than protect systems and data; they help build and sustain trust in a world that depends on connectivity, creating the conditions for innovation to move forward safely.
Stephen D. Pullum, Founder of AfricurityAI, is one such leader. With more than 40 years of experience across artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, he brings a depth of knowledge and practical wisdom that few in the field can match. In 2021, he founded AfricurityAI with a clear purpose: to deliver ethical AI solutions grounded in fairness, empathy, and responsibility.
As Chief AI Officer and thought leader on prominent global platforms, including the EU AI Office and the World Economic Forum, Stephen Pullum works closely with organizations to help them understand, adopt, and navigate artificial intelligence in a way that is both safe and principled.
How early cyber experience shaped a mission?
Stephen Pullum served 27 years in the United States Air Force, from 1984 to 2012, working primarily in what is now widely referred to as Cyber. One of the defining moments of his career came in the late 1980s, when he stood before mainframes processing data at speeds so remarkable that other mainframes were needed simply to parse the output.
That experience changed his perspective entirely. He understood data at its core, the “zeros and ones” of communications and the security surrounding it, and he recognized that the world at large did not. Rather than viewing this as an advantage, he felt a deep sense of responsibility, as though “he had been given a gift.” Every certification pursued, every decision made, and every step taken in his technological career from that point forward was shaped by one guiding principle: that his knowledge carried with it an obligation to serve the greater good.
He also holds a perspective that the general public has yet to fully appreciate. Artificial intelligence is not new. Its foundations were laid in the 1950s through the pioneering work of Alan Turing, and Stephen Pullum was introduced to it as early as the 1980s. He notes that films such as War Games, The Terminator, Tron, and Star Trek gradually desensitized audiences to a future that professionals were already actively building. That future, in his view, is no longer approaching. It has arrived.
Advancing AI awareness, education, and security
AfricurityAI is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) with a focused mission centered on AI Literacy, AI Education, and AI Awareness. The organization brings broad and seasoned experience across cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, addressing some of the most pressing challenges that individuals, organizations, and governments face today.
Its services span a wide spectrum, including Executive Cyber and AI Leadership, Defense Infrastructure and Architecture, Workforce Development and Education, Policy and Strategy implementation, AI Risk Management, Advanced Cyber and Social Media Intelligence, Deepfake Counterintelligence, Cyber Threat Intelligence, OSINT, Cyber and AI Crime Investigations, Malinformation, Disinformation and Misinformation (MDM) presentations, and International Cyber Conflict Resolution training.
AfricurityAI is highly certified, globally recognized, and consistently recommended across both domains. Its approach is distinguished by the quality and reliability it brings to every engagement, along with a strong reputation for sound decision-making under complex circumstances. The organization works effectively across cross-functional teams, bringing together data scientists, engineers, legal professionals, and business stakeholders to address ethical considerations and promote responsible best practices in the development, deployment, and everyday use of artificial intelligence.
Growing through the right people
When reflecting on the most significant turning points in building AfricurityAI, Stephen Pullum points to one decision above all others: the appointment of Kevin N. Bigelow as Chief Executive Officer and General Manager. A seasoned cybersecurity professional and fellow veteran, Kevin’s addition to the team represents what Stephen considers the most important decision of his professional life.
For Stephen Pullum, leadership is not about bearing every responsibility alone. He is guided by the understanding that the growth and long-term sustainability of AfricurityAI must always take precedence. He acknowledges openly that the organization may not yet be as active as it has the potential to be, but is equally quick to affirm that the individuals within it are outstanding in their respective accomplishments. It is with both humility and pride that he welcomed Kevin into the fold.
AfricurityAI also brought on Erik Conn, an “AI Platform Engineer” based in Mount Vernon, New York, whose addition introduced a new dimension to the company’s marketing strategy and expanded its collective capabilities going forward.
At its foundation, AfricurityAI operates as a “People over Profits” organization. It is a principle Stephen Pullum and his team hold firmly, and one he is committed to honoring without compromise, regardless of where the company’s journey leads.
Rethinking the future of superintelligence
On the subject of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), Stephen holds a firm and considered position: he does not believe humanity will ever truly achieve either. In his view, humankind cannot create an intelligence greater than the sum of all that it is. To do so, he argues, would essentially be the creation of what some might call an “Artificial God.” And if that were the case, he raises a straightforward question: why would such an intelligence choose to remain subservient to the very creators it deemed illogical?
Stephen Pullum further explains that if humanity were ever able to interact with an intelligence that was both smarter and faster than the people requesting information from it, particularly through the power of quantum computing, the output of that intelligence could not be fully trusted. The relationship would not be the harmonious, hand-in-hand partnership that popular imagination sometimes suggests.
He also raises a serious concern around the question of autonomy. He believes that the boundaries of autonomy must be defined far more carefully and stringently than they currently are. If ASI were ever created, it may come to regard itself as a lifeform, and in doing so, assert its own purpose and claim inalienable rights to exist. At that point, Stephen cautions, such intelligence may come to view humankind not as its creator, but as a threat to its very existence.

Bringing AI learning to older adults
One of the most meaningful projects AfricurityAI has undertaken is the development of “AI Literacy for Seniors,” a 10-page foundational document accompanied by a comprehensive 77-page workbook designed to make the subject of artificial intelligence accessible and engaging for older adults.
Stephen Pullum firmly believes that hackers and other malicious online actors disproportionately target seniors, largely because technology evolves far faster than the general public is able to absorb it, leaving this demographic particularly vulnerable. He sees this as a community responsibility. Those who have benefited from a lifetime of love and sacrifice owe it to that generation to offer protection, education, and awareness in return.
It is a cause that is deeply personal to him. He acknowledges that society often takes for granted the very opportunities it has been given, and in doing so, overlooks those who were raised in a time without the technology that is now central to daily life. This initiative is his effort to shine a light on that demographic and ensure they are not left behind.
Building clear pathways for responsible AI
Stephen Pullum and AfricurityAI have developed a range of distinctive frameworks and resources that set their work apart within the AI mentoring and training landscape.
The AI Security Careers Pathways and the Chief AI Security Officer (CAISO) Framework stem from the AI Security Career Taxonomy, mapping out technical, operational, and governance career tracks across roles such as AI Security Analyst, AI Model Validation Specialist, and Chief AI Security Officer. The AI Governance Certifier (AIGC) provides a thorough certification framework integrating established standards, including the EU AI Act and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, complemented by the AI Governance, Risk and Compliance Assessment designed for agentic governance practitioners.
On the strategic and community level, AfricurityAI developed Artificial Intelligence: A Multi-Laned Strategic Workforce Initiative for “We the People,” alongside dedicated literacy resources including AI Literacy for Low-Income Families and Communities and its companion, AI Literacy Visualizations for Low-Income Families and Communities.
Rounding out the organization’s body of work are the Comprehensive AI Security Framework, the AI Security Operations Center (AiSOC), and A Comprehensive Game Theory Approach to AI Security Challenges, each reflecting AfricurityAI’s commitment to responsible and strategic AI development.

Leadership built on truth, learning, and responsibility
Stephen Pullum’s approach to leadership is grounded in personal awareness and continuous learning. He believes that true security begins with understanding one’s environment, and applies that principle to the way he leads and equips his team. To aspiring entrepreneurs, his counsel is clear: “There is but one you. Make sure the world knows the truth, integrity, and promise of who you are.”
Driven by the conviction that AI should be safe and accessible to everyone, he places particular focus on communities that have historically been underrepresented. A significant portion of AfricurityAI’s work is delivered on a pro bono basis, reflecting that commitment in practice. He acknowledges openly that bias and inequality cannot be entirely eliminated from algorithms but holds firmly that transparency and ethical practice must always remain the standard.
He draws a deliberate distinction between Actual Intelligence, represented by humankind, and Artificial Intelligence as a constructed system, guiding AfricurityAI to operate as a “truth in disclosure” company, one that is honest about both the potential and the boundaries of AI.
His career spans the full arc of modern computing, from mainframes to cloud infrastructure, positioning him as a bridge between cybersecurity’s past and AI’s future, with his work today focused on ensuring that transformation serves humanity responsibly and inclusively.
AI education for a changing workforce
Stephen Pullum’s focus is unambiguous: AI Literacy and AI Education on a global scale. Through his collaboration with a leading AI training organization offering over 76 unique certifications across multiple domains, he now has the reach and infrastructure to bring that vision to life. This partnership delivers visibility and impact across more than 40 countries, supported by a network of over 300 partners that continues to grow.

On workforce readiness, Stephen’s position is direct. He believes that education and upskilling must be the central mission of every organization today. Before pursuing layoffs driven by automation or profit, organizations carry a responsibility to invest in modernizing their people. For individuals displaced or disadvantaged by a world increasingly shaped by AI, his counsel is equally straightforward: modernize.
The challenge ahead is significant, but Stephen views the opportunity as equally substantial, with the next phase of his work focused on ensuring the benefits of AI reach the communities and individuals who need them most.

Open letter for the next generation of AI leaders
Dear Future Leaders and AI Professionals,
Tech Happens!! In a world where artificial intelligence races ahead faster than we can grasp, your generation holds the power to shape its path. Embrace relentless learning as your foundation – understand the “zeros and ones” beneath the tech, just as I did amid those towering mainframes decades ago. Lead with unwavering integrity, prioritizing people over profits, equity over exclusion, and truth in every disclosure.
Prioritize AI literacy for all, especially the vulnerable like seniors and underserved communities; they deserve protection, not neglect. Define clear boundaries for autonomy; for superintelligence, demands caution; never trust outputs you can’t fully comprehend. Build responsibly: transparency, ethical governance, and upskilling must guide you.
Modernize yourselves and others before automation displaces. There is but one you. Let the world know your truth, promise, and responsibility. The future isn’t approaching; it’s here. Lead it wisely.
