In This Article

Over the years, technology enthusiasts and professionals alike have encountered an array of computers, some exceptional and others disappointing. Among them, a select few stand out for their reliability, performance, and user experience. This article ranks the top five computers based on personal experience, detailing the reasons they earned their spots on the list.

Fifth Place: Dell Chromebook 11

The Dell Chromebook 11 became a worthy successor to the ASUS Eee PC netbook, offering significant improvements in design and functionality. Featuring an Intel 2955U processor, 4GB RAM, an 11.6-inch 1366×768 LCD screen, and SSD storage, this Chromebook provided a step up in quality. Though Chrome OS was more limited at the time—lacking the Google Play Store and official Linux support—users found ways to expand its capabilities.

By utilizing Crouton, users could run desktop Linux, allowing for more advanced applications and even gaming. Titles like Team Fortress 2 and Civilization V performed surprisingly well on the device. While software compatibility remained a minor issue, the Dell Chromebook 11 proved to be a versatile and adaptable machine, supported by an active developer community.

Fourth Place: ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD

One of the first new computers owned in pristine condition, the ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD left a lasting impression. With a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N455 processor, a 10.1-inch screen with a 1024×600 resolution, 1GB RAM, and a 250GB hard drive, this netbook delivered solid performance for its time.

The laptop’s early tasks included playing 720p MPEG videos—something that previous systems struggled with. It initially came with Windows 7 Starter Edition but was quickly replaced with Ubuntu Linux. Over time, different Linux distributions were tested, and it was even turned into a Hackintosh running a modified version of macOS Snow Leopard.

Despite its cheap plastic casing, which eventually cracked, the Eee PC was a reliable and flexible machine while it lasted. Among the top five computers of its era, it stood out for its flexibility and practicality, even with its durability shortcomings.

Third Place: iMac G4

The iMac G4, widely regarded as one of Apple’s most iconic designs, introduced a unique hemispheric base with an adjustable flat LCD screen. This desktop was used extensively for web browsing, gaming, and emulation.

Running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, the iMac G4 supported classic games like Minecraft and even functioned as a Minecraft server through LogMeIn Hamachi. With Microsoft Virtual PC, users could experiment with older Windows and DOS applications. Eventually, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard was unofficially installed, extending its usability. The iMac G4 remains a beloved piece of Apple history.

Second Place: Apple Mac Mini (Late 2012)

Among multiple Mac Mini devices owned, the 2012 model stood out. Powered by an Intel Core i5-3210M processor, 4GB RAM, and a 500GB hard drive, it was used extensively for software development, virtual machines, and productivity tasks.

Although its performance declined over time due to the mechanical hard drive, switching to Windows 7 through Boot Camp significantly improved speed. Eventually, it was repurposed as a Plex server, demonstrating its longevity and adaptability.

First Place: Apple MacBook Air (Late 2020, M1)

Topping the list is the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, which revolutionized the laptop experience. Unlike previous Windows-based laptops that suffered from performance issues, this MacBook offered speed, silence (due to a fanless design), and all-day battery life.

Despite having only 8GB of RAM, it efficiently handled tasks such as Photoshop editing, virtual machines, and web development. Unlike Windows-based systems, macOS provided a seamless experience without frequent prompts for OneDrive or Edge setup. Among the top five computers, the MacBook Air stands out as a powerful and reliable choice for its exceptional performance and usability.
