Faulty Batteries Lead to Power Problems
Ford Motor Co. has announced the recall of 272,827 Bronco and Maverick vehicles due to a power issue that may cause the vehicles to unexpectedly lose power or fail to start. The problem stems from 12-volt batteries supplied by Camel Battery, a Chinese manufacturer, which were found to have internal manufacturing defects, including weld failures that can result in open circuits. According to the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), these battery defects could potentially affect only about 1% of the vehicles equipped with them. Fortunately, no accidents, fires, or injuries have been reported as a result of this issue.
Production Timeline and Affected Models
The vehicles impacted by this recall were manufactured between February 2021 and October 2023. Ford Motor Co has since ceased using the faulty batteries in its vehicles. The recall follows earlier concerns involving similar models, including the 2021–2023 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022–2023 Ford Maverick pickups. Reports indicated that some vehicles experienced sudden power loss, leaving them unable to activate hazard lights or signal warnings to other drivers. To address the issue, Ford plans to implement software updates that will enhance the detection of battery-related problems and provide early warnings to drivers before power loss occurs.
Commitment to Safety and Accountability
This recall highlights Ford’s ongoing efforts to improve its safety standards and address recall-related concerns. In November, the company committed to refining its recall decision-making process after facing penalties for delays in addressing a previous recall. As part of this commitment, Ford agreed to be monitored by an independent third party over the next three years to ensure better recall performance. By taking these steps, Ford Motor Co aims to reinforce its dedication to vehicle safety and customer trust.
Drivers of affected vehicles are encouraged to contact their local dealerships for further assistance and necessary repairs.
