Nissan recalls impacts over 480,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada due to a potential engine failure risk tied to faulty variable-compression turbo (VC-Turbo) engines. The defect could lead to sudden power loss and raise the risk of crashes, according to official filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall impacts approximately 443,900 vehicles in the United States and 37,837 in Canada, bringing the total to over 481,000 affected units. The models involved include:
- Nissan Rogue (2021–2024)
- Nissan Altima (2019–2020)
- Infiniti QX50 (2019–2022)
- Infiniti QX55 (2022)
The core issue stems from potential contamination during the manufacturing of the VC-Turbo engines, which can lead to debris in the engine oil system. This debris could damage engine bearings, resulting in unusual noises, rough operation, power loss, or complete engine failure, as reported by CBS News.
Although the defect is expected to be present in only 1.2% of the recalled vehicles, the possibility of engine seizure has prompted Nissan to act quickly.

Nissan has assured customers that all repairs will be performed free of charge. The company’s repair strategy involves a multi-step inspection and servicing process at its authorized dealerships.
According to Fox Business, technicians will check the oil pans of the affected engines for metallic debris. If debris is found, the engine will be either repaired or entirely replaced.
For engines that show no signs of internal damage:
- 1.5-liter engines will have the oil pan gasket replaced, engine oil replenished, and engine control software reprogrammed.
- 2.0-liter engines will receive a simple engine oil replacement.
Nissan is scheduled to begin notifying owners by mail starting August 25, 2025, as per the official report from USA Today. Concerned vehicle owners can also contact Nissan customer service or check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) online to confirm if their car is affected.
