Apple has introduced the Apple MacBook Neo, a new entry-level laptop aimed at making the macOS ecosystem more accessible to a broader range of users. Announced during the company’s March 2026 product event, the device represents Apple’s most affordable MacBook to date and signals a strategic push toward the mid-range laptop segment.
The MacBook Neo starts at $599 in the United States, with an education price of $499, while a higher storage configuration is priced at $699. In India, the laptop is expected to begin at approximately ₹69,900, positioning it competitively against mid-range Windows laptops and premium Chromebooks.
Designed to appeal particularly to students and first-time Mac users, the Apple MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display and a lightweight aluminum body. Apple has also introduced a more vibrant aesthetic compared to traditional MacBooks, offering the device in four color options: silver, indigo, blush, and citrus,s with matching wallpapers and keyboard accents.
Industry observers say the launch marks a notable shift in Apple’s laptop strategy. While the company has traditionally focused on premium devices, the Neo represents an effort to capture a larger share of the education and entry-level computing markets, where affordability often plays a decisive role in purchase decisions.
iPhone-Level Processor Brings Efficiency to the Laptop
One of the most distinctive features of the MacBook Neo is the processor powering it. Unlike Apple’s higher-end MacBooks that use M-series chips, the Neo runs on the A18 Pro chip, the same processor first introduced in the company’s latest iPhone models.
The use of an iPhone-class chip reflects Apple’s broader effort to unify its hardware ecosystem. According to the company, the Apple MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro provides enough performance to handle everyday computing tasks such as web browsing, document editing, video streaming, and light creative work while maintaining high power efficiency.
The chip also includes a Neural Engine designed for on-device artificial intelligence, enabling users to run Apple’s AI-powered features directly on the laptop. These capabilities include AI-assisted photo editing, productivity enhancements, and system-level smart features that process data locally rather than relying heavily on cloud services.
The MacBook Neo comes with 8GB of unified memory, with storage options starting at 256GB and expanding to 512GB in higher configurations. Apple claims the laptop can deliver up to 16 hours of battery life, making it suitable for full-day use in classrooms, offices, or remote work environments.
Additional hardware features include a 1080p webcam for video calls, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, Bluetooth 6 support, and dual speakers with spatial audio, providing a balanced mix of performance and everyday functionality.
Budget Strategy Brings a Few Compromises
To achieve its lower price point, Apple has made several trade-offs compared with premium MacBook models. The Apple MacBook Neo does not include MagSafe charging, Thunderbolt ports, or certain advanced hardware features found in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines.
Some entry-level conveniences are also limited. The base model features a non-backlit keyboard, while Touch ID is only available on higher-storage configurations. Additionally, the device uses a traditional mechanical trackpad rather than the haptic trackpads present in Apple’s premium laptops.
Despite these compromises, the Apple MacBook Neo retains many characteristics associated with Apple devices, including a high-resolution display, macOS integration with the iPhone ecosystem, and a premium aluminum design. The company has also emphasized sustainability, stating that the laptop incorporates a significant amount of recycled materials, including recycled aluminum and battery components.
Pre-orders for the MacBook Neo opened shortly after the announcement, with retail availability expected to begin on March 11, 2026.
