From Student to Educator

Byron began his journey in education as a student, observing not just his studies but the people who influenced his life—teachers, coaches, and family. He paid close attention to their leadership, the way they carried themselves, and how others responded to them. This early curiosity inspired him to pursue a career in education, driven by a desire to be around people passionate about learning and growth. Over time, he came to understand that education is not just about transferring knowledge—it is about shaping character, building communities, and inspiring individuals to live with purpose. This realization led him to see himself as a teacher and as a leader in a broader sense.

Early Lessons in Leadership and Trust

Early in his career, Byron M. Lawson Jr. faced the challenge of being the first minority high school teacher at the Kinkaid School in Houston, TX. Having moved from Baltimore, MD—a city with a very different cultural landscape—he had to navigate the complexities of being an insider, as a faculty member, and an outsider, because of his background and identity. This experience shaped his understanding of leadership as a process of building trust, understanding interpersonal dynamics, and learning how social systems function. It taught him empathy and resilience—lessons that continue to guide his leadership within the school community today.

Through these experiences, Byron also discovered the power of intentional listening. While he initially believed leadership was primarily about vision and execution—setting a direction and guiding others to follow—he learned that truly listening was even more valuable. Listening carefully makes a leader more thoughtful, attentive to detail, and demonstrates respect, showing others that their voices matter. Leadership, he realized, is about guiding with people, not just for them.

Trinity Prep follows a philosophy that is simple yet ambitious: to pursue excellence in everything. Its mission is to develop ethical, resilient leaders who embrace diverse perspectives and grow spiritually and intellectually. This philosophy is reflected in the school’s daily culture.

Academically, the school sets high expectations. Last year, its 519 students took 1,100 AP exams, demonstrating rigor and opportunity. At the same time, the school emphasizes balance, viewing excellence not as perfection, but as growth, resilience, and the courage to take risks.

On the business side, he navigates challenges such as a shrinking pipeline of teachers, declining enrollment at independent schools, and declining U.S. birthrates for school-aged children.  

On the academic side, Byron M. Lawson Jr. emphasizes flexibility. He ensures students have access to multiple learning pathways, including face-to-face instruction, synchronous online courses, summer school, and dual-enrollment university programs. This approach allows students to continue progressing regardless of economic, technological, or societal changes.

Regarding technology and AI, Byron M. Lawson Jr.takes a measured approach. He views AI as a useful tool, similar to how calculators were once seen, but believes it cannot replace human creativity or judgment. His focus is on using innovation wisely—enhancing productivity without sacrificing authenticity, care, or human connection, ensuring students are nurtured as individuals, not treated like machines.

Trinity Prep has produced several alumni whose achievements reflect the school’s mission. Among the most notable is Dr. Pardis Sabeti, an epidemiologist affiliated with MIT and Harvard, who provided critical insights during the COVID-19 pandemic that helped the school stay safe and operational. Another distinguished alumnus, Shyam Sankar, CTO of Palantir, a fast-growing publicly traded US stock for the last year. He and his wife championed the building of a new science center named the Nochur Sankar Science Center. Containing a BSL-2 lab, the center will give students hands-on research experience typically reserved for professional scientists. These stories exemplify Trinity Prep’s mission of providing meaningful, impactful, and globally significant learning experiences.

Meaningful Collaborations Across Continents

Trinity Prep has been deliberate in forging partnerships around the world, expanding perspectives, and providing students with authentic learning opportunities. Collaborations with schools in South Africa, Australia, Israel, China, France, Peru, and Brazil go beyond symbolic connections, resulting in real exchanges, joint projects, and shared innovation.

Locally, Trinity Prep’s community engagement is equally strong. It works closely with organizations, universities, and cultural institutions to link learning with service and practical, real-world experiences. These efforts ensure that students graduate with academic excellence and as socially responsible and globally aware individuals. Their most notable service relationship over the last 30 years has been with Habitat for Humanity, Winter Park/Maitland, with whom they have built 26 homes for those in need.
