As the world of design continues to evolve, true leadership thrives on the ability to innovate, adapt, and create beyond the ordinary. This mindset is at the core of Dawn Christine’s approach to architecture, where creativity and cutting-edge design are key drivers of success.
Under her leadership, Dawn Christine, Architect PLLC, has become a trailblazer in pushing design boundaries—ensuring that each project is functional and beautiful yet deeply impactful. Dawn’s commitment to continuous innovation ensures that her team remains at the forefront of the industry, delivering unforgettable experiences emerging as one of the most inspiring women architects to watch in 2025.
The Spark of Independence
The journey to founding Dawn Christine, Architect PLLC, began when Dawn found herself at a crossroads in her career. After 15 years of working for a female architect in Raleigh, she was ready to take the next step. “I sat for my licensing exams and was looking for a creative outlet,” she shares.
“When you’re working for somebody else, they’re making all the decisions, including the design calls. I reached a point where I wanted to start making those decisions myself.”
The tipping point came during a conversation with her boss, who was unwilling to let go of control. “She wasn’t interested in giving up the reins and letting another designer take charge of a project,” Dawn reflects. That moment ignited her passion to branch out on her own and build something that would allow her to truly express her creative vision.
Leading by Example
When asked about her leadership philosophy, Dawn emphasizes a blend of compassion and firmness. “I lead by example,” she says. “I don’t ask my staff to do something that I’m not willing to do myself.” Her leadership style can be described as “gentle but firm,” a balance that has allowed her to manage a diverse team of professionals from various cultural backgrounds.
Dawn has collaborated with women from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Chinese, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Serbian, and American—gaining valuable insights and experiences along the way. Today, her company has become a place where diversity thrives. She notes, “It’s been really exciting to work in such a diverse environment with people from different backgrounds,” underscoring the value and cultural richness that also fosters respect for all team members.
Prioritizing Work-Life Balance
Dawn’s approach to work-life balance stems from her own personal experience as a single mother with three children. “When I started my practice, I was a single mom. It was important to me to run my business excellently while also having time to raise my children,” she recalls.
This understanding of family dynamics has influenced the culture within her company, ensuring that employees are encouraged to maintain a healthy balance between their work and personal lives. She reflects on the early days when her business started at home. “I was working out of my home with employees in a small 1400-square-foot house. It was in my dining room that my firm got kicked off, but it was a family-oriented context,” she explains.
That familial atmosphere has remained at the heart of her business. “There’s a real kinship among the staff. We work together like a family, and that still exists today. Everyone gels well with one another, and I believe that starts from leadership down.”
An Experiential Approach to Architecture
When it comes to the services offered by her firm, Dawn describes its primary specialization as design, but with a unique twist. “I call myself an experiential architect,” she says, highlighting what sets her apart from others in the industry. While many architects focus on form and function—designing with the external appearance and practical needs of a building in mind Dawn’s approach goes deeper.
She explains, “I think about architecture not only from the outside but also from the inside. It’s about creating an iconic experience.” For her, the design of a space isn’t just about aesthetics or utility but about how people interact with the space and the emotional impact it has.
This experiential approach is central to the firm’s philosophy. “How can the space impact their mindset for the day?” she asks. “How can it elevate their experience and inspire them to invest in their family, invest in their future, and do the best that they can do?” In this way, Dawn’s designs transcend traditional architecture, creating spaces that foster connection, motivation, and growth.
Balancing Creativity with Stability
One of the key challenges in any creative industry is finding the right balance between innovation and stability. For Dawn, navigating the delicate line between taking creative risks and ensuring organizational stability comes naturally. “I’m inherently a creative person,” she acknowledges. “But I also understand that balancing risk with creativity is crucial.”
Dawn explains that many architects struggle with stagnation due to fear of failure, but for her, this is not a concern. “I’m not afraid to push the boundaries, but I also have a strong instinct about when to push and when to hold back.” This ability to gauge the right amount of risk is a significant part of her success.
“I know my limitations, and I also know my strengths,” Dawn shares. Her deep self-awareness is what empowers her to take bold steps. “If I don’t understand something, I know I can figure it out,” she continues, which gives her the confidence to continuously innovate.
A Unique Combination of Artistic Vision and Technical Expertise
Dawn’s unique strength lies in her ability to seamlessly shift between the roles of artist and engineer. “I’m the artist in one part of the project, and then I become the engineer in the other,” she explains. This dual capability allows her to balance creativity with the practical, analytical side of architecture.
While many architects tend to favor one side—either the artistic vision or the technical execution—Dawn believes her success lies in mastering both. “I think my strength comes from being able to navigate from one to the other and executing both at a really high level,” she says. This ability has allowed her to push the limits of creativity while maintaining the structure necessary to ensure profitability and stability for the company.
Nurturing the Next Generation
When it comes to identifying and developing talent within her organization, Dawn takes a hands-on approach. Without merely overseeing the work, she’s actively involved in the day-to-day operations—providing guidance and support as her team navigates their projects.
Weekly meetings ensure everyone is on the same page, but it’s her open-door policy that truly sets the tone for her leadership. “My office door is always open, and my staff comes in and out constantly,” Dawn shares. “I’m in my seat for no more than five minutes at a time—I’m always coordinating with my team.”
Mentorship plays a crucial role in this process. “The mentorship process is very active during the design and production of our projects,” Dawn explains. She works closely with each team member, adapting her mentorship to their specific needs and professional goals. Whether it’s helping a licensed architect from the Middle East navigate citizenship or encouraging staff to develop professionally, Dawn ensures that each individual receives the guidance they require to reach their full potential.
The Importance of Mentorship and Personalized Growth
For Dawn, mentorship is not just a workplace strategy—it’s personal. Her approach is grounded in genuine care for her team’s success. “I have that innate sense of wanting to help people, especially young students,” she shares, recalling her recent visit to a high school where she gave a presentation to inspire the next generation of architects. This nurturing instinct extends to her employees, even those who may not end up working for her. “I still reach out to people I’ve interviewed but didn’t hire,” she adds. “I check in with them and see how they’re doing.”
This attitude has created a culture where growth and development are prioritized. She takes the time to get to know each team member, helping them recognize their unique interests and providing opportunities for them to develop professionally. “I try to help them become their best self and then give them those opportunities,” Dawn states—ensuring that mentorship remains a cornerstone of her leadership philosophy.
Recent Successful Launches and Expansions
Dawn shared several initiatives currently underway that highlight her business’s expansion and innovation. One of the standout projects is the development of a virtual reality (VR) experience for clients. “We’re kicking off the VR experience where clients can immerse themselves in their spaces in real-time,” she says. This product provides clients with a tangible understanding of the design by allowing them to virtually step inside the spaces before they are built. “What’s making this successful is the ability to show the client the scale of a building. When they can see it in VR, they better understand how the space will feel. It empowers them to make better design decisions,” she explains.
A Global Vision for Architecture
Another initiative Dawn is excited about is a new YouTube channel called Design Talk. The channel focuses on educating audiences about the design process and offers insights into everything from basic principles to specific project details. “We’re documenting our current projects and walking through the design process with builders and clients,” she says. The goal is to create a resource that demystifies design and helps potential clients understand how various elements come together.
Beyond just educating viewers, the channel also takes the audience on a journey across the globe, such as a recent trip to New Zealand. “We’re filming the landscape, the architecture, and the sense of community through the lens of design,” she adds, showing how her experiential architecture approach is grounded in a deeper understanding of place and environment.
Lastly, Dawn aims to expand her business internationally with the formation of The Cross Pacific Design Group, a collaborative effort catering to American clients wishing to build in New Zealand. “I fell in love with New Zealand and wanted to design projects there,” she shares. After establishing a network of architects, builders, engineers, and other professionals, she created a streamlined process for American clients to work with her in the U.S. and have their projects seamlessly translated to New Zealand’s standards and codes.
Challenges Faced and Overcoming Them:
Dawn shares a deeply personal and spiritual journey in overcoming the challenges of starting her business:
- Financial Struggles and Uncertainty: Starting the business, she was a single mom with no money and many financial obligations. The volatility of the architecture industry, especially in the early stages, made it even more daunting to take the leap. She was also afraid of not having the resources to succeed, which made the decision to go out on her own even more difficult.
- How She Overcame It: The turning point came when she experienced a spiritual moment with God, listening to the song Walk on Water by Britt Nicole. The song spoke to her fears and insecurities, telling her that she was made for more and with faith, she could overcome them. This divine inspiration gave her the courage to move forward, even without knowing how things would turn out. She decided to take the risk, trusting that God would guide her every step of the way.
- Overcoming Self-Doubt and Fear: She confesses that when she started her business, she had insecurities about facing challenges head-on without a guaranteed way to meet her financial obligations.
- How She Overcame It: She leaned into her faith, trusting that she had been called to pursue this path. Through perseverance and prayer, she overcame these doubts, learning to rely on divine guidance rather than her own limited understanding.
- Business Management and Operations: Aside from design, managing a business came with its own set of challenges. Early on, her business was built on word-of-mouth referrals, which meant that sometimes misunderstandings would arise about what was promised. Moreover, managing business operations such as finding workspace, hiring staff, and ensuring the business remained profitable required juggling multiple responsibilities.
- How She Overcame It: Dawn had to adjust her approach to avoid conflicts by being clear in contracts and communications. She also worked hard to balance the financial aspects, ensuring she was efficient and not operating in the red. The constant focus on running the business efficiently and resolving issues as they came up was key to her success and growth.
- Spiritual Guidance and Perseverance: The most significant challenge was not knowing if her decision to start the business would work out.
- How She Overcame It: By relying on her faith and trusting that God would provide, she was able to navigate through difficult moments. She draws a parallel with the biblical story of Moses parting the Red Sea—illustrating how faith allowed her to overcome what seemed like impossible obstacles.
- The Unknown: Starting a business from scratch meant there was no clear roadmap or guaranteed success. There were many unknowns, and she had to face them one step at a time.
- How She Overcame It: Faith in the bible and divine guidance and persistence was her guiding force. Even though she didn’t know whether her leap would succeed, she moved forward, and it turned out to be the right decision.
A Vision for the Future
Dawn is currently focused on excelling at her existing commitments, particularly her design work and her collaborations with the Cross Pacific Design Group. She is dedicated to refining her skills and ensuring the success of the projects she has already taken on. Additionally, she is actively networking with other architects in the Raleigh-Cary area, aiming to tackle larger projects collaboratively.
One of the key focuses of these partnerships is on high-rise designs, and they are looking to build stronger relationships that can handle more complex and high-profile projects. As for her long-term plans, Dawn is optimistic but with so many opportunities already on the table, she does not know where the next five to ten years will take her. Much depends on which of her current ventures gains significant traction, and she remains hopeful that multiple initiatives will succeed. With this growth, she sees a limitless potential for the future and is excited about the opportunities that may arise.
