Dell targets students with lower-priced XPS 13
Dell unveiled the 2026 XPS 13 as part of its effort to expand the premium laptop lineup while appealing to students seeking performance and portability at a lower cost. The company said eligible high school and college students can purchase the device for $599 through Nov. 2, while standard pricing begins at $699.
The launch follows Dell’s revival of the XPS brand earlier this year after discontinuing it in 2025. The company reintroduced the XPS 14 and XPS 16 at CES 2026 and had signaled plans for a more affordable XPS 13
“We’re not trying to be the cheapest option with the XPS 13; we’re not racing to the bottom on price,” Dell Technologies Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke said before the product announcement.
Clarke said Dell focused on delivering features students value without requiring major compromises on performance or design.
Premium features aim to differentiate the device
The new Dell XPS 13 weighs about 2.2 pounds and features a 13.4-inch OLED display with a dynamic refresh rate that adjusts between 30Hz and 120Hz to balance performance and battery efficiency.
Dell said the laptop can deliver up to 17 hours of battery life while streaming video. The device is powered by Intel’s new Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” processors, with options for more powerful Panther Lake chips in higher configurations.
“We have a $599 price point for the back-to-school season, touch screen, backlit keyboard, more storage, faster Wi-Fi, lighter weight, the full XPS experience,” Clarke said.
The company also highlighted support for the DCI-P3 color gamut, a standard commonly used in digital cinema and creative work. Storage options range from 256GB to 1TB, while memory configurations can reach 32GB.
Competition intensifies in budget premium laptop market
Industry observers view Dell’s pricing strategy as a direct response to increasing competition in the premium laptop segment. Apple’s MacBook Neo, also priced at $599, has renewed focus on lower-cost devices from major technology companies.
