Ford Motor Co. announced on Monday that it plans to build a new battery plant in Michigan as part of its push to expand its electric vehicle (EV) offerings. The company said that the new facility will allow it to manufacture its own batteries, rather than relying on third-party suppliers.
Ford Tapping into EV Tax Credits
The new plant will be located in Romulus, Michigan, and is expected to create over 5,000 new jobs. The project will be carried out in partnership with South Korean battery maker SK Innovation, which will supply the plant with the necessary components to produce battery cells.
The decision to build the plant in Michigan comes in part due to the state’s generous tax incentives for EV production. Under the current system, automakers can claim up to $7,500 in federal tax credits for each EV they produce. However, these credits are only available for a limited time, and once an automaker sells 200,000 EVs, the credits begin to phase out.
Expanding the EV Offerings
Ford has been pushing hard to expand its electric vehicle lineup in recent years, with plans to introduce several new models in the coming years. However, the company has faced stiff competition from other automakers, such as Tesla, which has been leading the EV market for several years. Building its own battery plant is seen as a critical step for Ford to remain competitive in the EV space. The move will not only give the company more control over its supply chain, but it will also allow it to reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers.
The Romulus facility is expected to have an initial capacity of 60 gigawatt-hours of battery cells per year, with the potential to expand to 100 gigawatt-hours. This will be enough to produce batteries for around 600,000 EVs per year. The battery plant is just one of several initiatives that Ford has launched to boost its EV production. The company is also investing heavily in charging infrastructure and is partnering with several major utilities to ensure that there are enough charging stations to support the growing number of EVs on the road.
