In a recent interview, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton raised concerns about disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining the 2024 presidential election. Speaking with Margaret Hoover on the PBS show “Firing Line,” Clinton warned that targeted efforts to distort the image of Vice President Kamala Harris would likely emerge as part of a broader strategy to manipulate public opinion in the lead-up to the November 5 election.

Clinton Highlights Past Disinformation Threats

Drawing on her own experience with conspiracy theories, Hillary Clinton discussed the infamous “Pizzagate” scandal from 2016. During her campaign against Donald Trump, a false story emerged claiming that she was involved in a child trafficking operation run out of a pizzeria. Despite the absurdity of the claim, it gained widespread attention online and eventually led to real-world violence. A man from North Carolina, driven by the false information, showed up at the pizza restaurant armed with an assault rifle, intent on rescuing children he believed were being held there.

Hillary Clinton recounted the incident, evoking laughter from the audience but quickly cautioned them not to dismiss it lightly. “Don’t laugh,” she urged. “This was dangerous stuff.” She went on to explain how the conspiracy began in the darker corners of the internet, gained traction through pro-Trump media outlets, and was eventually picked up by mainstream news sources, giving it widespread coverage.

The Pizzagate incident, she noted, demonstrated the real-life consequences of disinformation. “People believed it,” Clinton said, highlighting how even the most baseless of stories can influence public behavior, especially when amplified by certain media channels.

Warning of Foreign Influence and Future Attacks

Looking ahead to the 2024 election, Clinton expressed concerns that similar tactics would be employed to discredit Kamala Harris and other political figures. She suggested that foreign actors like China, Russia, and Iran could play a significant role in spreading misinformation aimed at swaying the election results. “There will be efforts to distort and pervert who Kamala Harris is, what she stands for, what she’s done,” Clinton predicted.

According to Hillary Clinton, the coming weeks will likely see a coordinated campaign to release damaging, false stories in what she called an “October surprise.” These stories, she said, could be designed to confuse voters and shift public opinion just before Election Day. “I don’t know what it’s going to be, but there will be something,” Clinton warned. She emphasized the importance of staying vigilant and debunking lies as quickly as they arise.

Clinton also stressed that the media has a responsibility to provide a consistent narrative about the potential dangers of misinformation and to report accurately on the threat that Donald Trump poses to the nation. Without such consistency, she argued, misleading stories have a higher chance of taking hold in the public consciousness.

As the 2024 election approaches, Clinton’s warning serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by disinformation and the need for both the public and the media to remain alert to efforts to manipulate the truth.
