LA Deputy Mayor Put on Leave During FBI Bomb Threat Inquiry | The Enterprise World

Bomb Threat Investigation and FBI Raid

The LA Deputy Mayor of Public Safety, Brian Williams, has been placed on administrative leave following allegations that he made a bomb threat against City Hall earlier this year. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initially investigated the threat and determined Williams to be the likely “source of the threat.” While the exact date of the incident remains unclear, the matter has escalated, prompting federal involvement.

On Tuesday, the FBI conducted a raid at Williams’ home as part of their ongoing investigation. Mayor Karen Bass’ office confirmed the search in a statement, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter. “The Mayor takes this matter very seriously,” said Zach Seidl, Deputy Mayor of Communications. He added that the LAPD had previously determined there was no immediate danger but referred the case to the FBI for further examination.

Administrative Action and LAPD Statement

Following the FBI raid, the LA Deputy Mayor was promptly placed on administrative leave. Mayor Bass’ office reiterated their commitment to public safety and full cooperation with the investigation. “When the threat was reported, LAPD investigated and determined there was no immediate danger,” the statement said. However, due to the LA Deputy Mayor’s professional ties to the LAPD and other emergency services, the matter was escalated to federal authorities.

The LAPD also addressed their decision to involve the FBI, citing the complexities of their working relationship with Williams. “Due to the department’s working relationship with Mr. Williams, the investigation was referred to the FBI,” read the LAPD statement. As of now, the FBI remains the lead agency handling the investigation.

Williams’ Background and Role in the Mayor’s Office

Brian Williams joined Mayor Karen Bass’ administration in March 2023, where he oversaw public safety operations and worked closely with key agencies, including the LAPD, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and emergency services. His role was central to ensuring coordination across safety departments in the city.

Before his current position, Williams served as the executive director of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission for seven years. His career also includes prior experience as deputy mayor under former LA Mayor James Hahn. Williams’ extensive history in public service adds significant weight to the unfolding investigation.

As the FBI probe continues, the incident raises questions about safety leadership and oversight at City Hall. The LA Deputy Mayor’s office and law enforcement agencies have not yet released further details but assure the public of their commitment to transparency as the investigation progresses.
