$14 Million Federal Grant for Green Development
San Bernardino is taking a significant step toward environmental sustainability after being awarded a federal grant worth over $14 million. The grant, provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, will be used to construct 101 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 15 strategic locations across the city. This initiative is part of a broader effort to make eco-friendly transportation more accessible to the local community.
“This grant propels San Bernardino toward a greener, more resilient future,” stated Mayor Helen Tran. She emphasized that the project not only promotes sustainable transportation but also highlights the city’s commitment to environmental progress and community development.
Key Locations for Charging Stations
The city has identified several critical sites where the new EV chargers will be installed. These include six parks and community centers, a soccer complex, the main library, City Hall, the Police Department, the City Yard, and various downtown parking locations. By placing the charging stations at these highly frequented areas, the city aims to cater to the needs of EV owners and encourage more residents to switch to electric vehicles.
San Bernardino’s new EV infrastructure plan aligns with broader national efforts to enhance clean energy transportation options. The project underscores the city’s dedication to fostering a sustainable future while improving its public amenities and urban mobility.
Part of a National Sustainability Effort
The grant is part of the Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration’s Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Program, which awarded funding to 49 recipients across the United States. Among the six California-based recipients, San Bernardino stands out as the sole representative from Southern California. Other recipients in the state include San Jose, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission.
This achievement highlights San Bernardino’s proactive approach to sustainability, placing it at the forefront of green innovation in the region. With the new EV charging infrastructure in place, the city aims to strengthen its role in combating climate change and supporting the transition to clean energy transportation.
