The city of Santiago was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish explorer Pedro de Valdivia. It was named Santiago del Nuevo Extremo (Santiago of New Extremadura), in honor of a patron of Spain Apostle James, near Huelén, which he renamed Santa Lucía.
