Tesla has issued a recall for approximately 27,000 Cybertrucks following concerns over a delayed rearview camera display, which increases the risk of accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) flagged the issue, stating that the rearview image could take up to 8 seconds to appear on the dashboard, exceeding the federally mandated 2-second limit. Tesla has responded with a free over-the-air software update to fix the problem.
Rearview Camera Delays Pose Safety Concerns
According to NHTSA’s filing, the delayed camera display poses a significant risk, as drivers rely on it for safe reversing. The 8-second lag when putting the Cybertruck in reverse could lead to increased chances of collisions, especially in tight or high-traffic areas. The federal safety requirement states that rearview displays must be visible within 2 seconds of engaging reverse gear.
Tesla is addressing the rearview camera issue with a software update, which can be installed remotely, allowing owners to fix the problem without visiting a service center. In the meantime, NHTSA advised that drivers can safely reverse by performing a “shoulder check” and using their side mirrors to avoid accidents.
This recall marks the fifth for the Cybertruck since its release last year. Previous recalls include a June issue related to the vehicle’s oversized single windshield wiper and a piece of plastic trim along the truck bed that could detach while driving. In April, another recall was triggered by a potential defect in the accelerator pedal, which could become stuck when pressed down, increasing the likelihood of unintended acceleration. Additionally, in January, Tesla issued a software recall affecting 2.2 million of its vehicles, including the Cybertruck, due to issues with warning light symbols being too small to read.

The electric vehicle manufacturer recently reported an increase in global deliveries, with nearly 463,000 vehicles sold in the third quarter of this year.
