Few entrepreneurs have successfully built thriving businesses in the medical field, but Leonid Shayman stands out as a notable example. His diverse career includes roles as an athlete, industrialist, and businessman. Until recently, Shayman was a co-owner of the European Medical Center (EMC), a private multidisciplinary clinic of the premium class. Under his leadership, the clinic earned a reputation for excellence, distinguished by its high standard of medical services and pioneering treatment methods. Shayman’s strategic vision and dedication to quality have been instrumental in positioning the European Medical Center as a leading institution in the healthcare sector.
Biography of Leonid Shayman
Leonid Shayman was born in Omsk to a family of a doctor and a teacher. His father, Matvey Shayman, held a PhD in virology and made significant contributions through his research on the Rickettsia slovaca strain. Shayman’s mother was a senior lecturer of English at the Omsk State Pedagogical Institute.
In 1975, after completing high school, Shayman entered the Omsk State Institute of Physical Culture and graduated with honors from the pedagogical department in 1979. During this period, Shayman was a member of the “Avangard” youth ice hockey team and participated in the Soviet Union Championship.
In 1991, Leonid Shayman decided to quit hockey and pursue entrepreneurship. He moved to Budapest and founded a company that specialized in exporting and importing food products and juices.
Since 1993, Shayman developed a business in mobile communications, owning and managing two telecommunications companies until they were successfully sold to strategic partners. During this period, he also founded his first medical company, Avicenna, in Novosibirsk.
In 1998, Shayman and his partners established the Nidan Juice Company in Hungary, building juice production sites in Novosibirsk and in the Moscow region. The brands produced there became well-known, with one recognized the leading brand in the country.
In 2008, Leonid Shayman and his business partners acquired the European Medical Center in Moscow, which has become their most significant and successful project.
Activities of GEMC
The European Medical Center currently comprises ten hospitals, including orthopaedic, aesthetic, maternity, oncology, surgical and children’s hospitals, as well as a rehabilitation center, and nursing homes. All business processes of the company are GMP and JCI certified.
In addition to a diverse range of services, EMC features the highest level of technology and innovation, with some initiated by Leonid Shayman, which become full-fledged products that are used in the center’s operations.
Among other things, Shayman spearheaded the in-house production of radiopharmaceuticals, established the process of modern positron emission tomography (PET) diagnostics, and introduced the latest methods of radiation therapy. In addition, a unique treatment method for patients with recurrent glioblastoma was developed in collaboration with Professor Alexey Krivoshapkin and Dr Salim Nidal using interactive radiation.
Another notable innovation at EMC is a newly developed and patented diagnostic technique for the Mammology Department, based on MRI rather than traditional biopsies. The technique has been successfully tested on nearly 10,000 patients and has proven highly effective.

Leonid Shayman’s role in GEMC
As a co-founder and shareholder of EMC, Leonid Shayman made significant contributions to the center’s development and growth. His primary focus areas at EMC were the development of the oncology department and the construction of new facilities. Notably, Shayman was involved in constructing a state-of-the-art cancer hospital, a 50,000-square-meter facility equipped with the latest technology from leading manufacturers such as Siemens, Varian Medical Systems, and General Electric.
Recently retired from his role in EMC’s management and development, Shayman now dedicates his time and energy to philanthropic initiatives. He actively supports various projects in sports and the arts and assists organizations that help children with cerebral palsy.
