The Onion Wins Auction to Acquire Infowars, Faces Legal Hurdle | The Enterprise World

The Satirical Turnaround

The Onion, a renowned satirical publication, announced its victory in acquiring Alex Jones’s controversial site, Infowars, through a bankruptcy auction. Infowars, known for promoting conspiracy theories, particularly by Jones himself, was placed up for auction as part of the ongoing legal and financial troubles facing Jones’s media empire. Jones, who faced a $1.4 billion defamation judgment after years of legal battles with the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims, now sees his infamous platform transferred to new ownership.

The Onion’s intention is not only business but also satire: it plans to relaunch Infowars as a parody of itself, ridiculing the “wild internet personalities” who spread misinformation, according to Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion’s parent company, Global Tetrahedron. The Sandy Hook families, who backed The Onion’s bid, welcomed the satirical publication’s approach, recognizing the potential to both curb the spread of misinformation and prevent Jones from using Infowars as a profit source.

A Pause in Proceedings

The transfer, however, was temporarily halted shortly after The Onion’s announcement. Judge Christopher Lopez, presiding over the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston, cited procedural issues, particularly the lack of transparency in the auction process. Walter J. Cicack, a lawyer for another bidder, First United American Companies, noted he was not informed of the final bidding amount or given the chance to raise his bid.

Amid concerns about the auction’s fairness, Judge Lopez called for a hearing to review the deal, seeking clarification on the assets involved, especially considering the inclusion of Jones’s social media account on X, which remains in dispute. Despite the pause, The Onion’s legal team assured that their offer remains in place, supported by a “credit bid,” which the Sandy Hook families agreed to extend by postponing their collection of a portion of the damages awarded to them.

A New Editorial Direction with Purpose

As The Onion awaits the final decision, it has already outlined ambitious plans for the new Infowars. The site, which once fueled conspiracy theories, will be repurposed to tackle misinformation and support gun violence awareness. Everytown for Gun Safety, an anti-gun violence organization, has signed on as a partner, agreeing to sponsor content and ads on the platform. The Onion also hinted that Infowars will publish satirical pieces spotlighting America’s gun violence epidemic.

The acquisition not only serves to restrict Jones’s influence but also offers the families a symbolic victory over the very platform that once peddled lies about their tragedy. Collins shared that The Onion team views this purchase as a tool for change, using humor and creativity to highlight important issues in a world “without guardrails.”
