New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed on Sunday that law enforcement is closing in on the suspect responsible for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Thompson, 50, was killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel on Wednesday morning while en route to his company’s annual investor conference. Adams revealed that the authorities are tracking the gunman’s movements and have recovered evidence, which has led to significant progress in the case.
Adams stated, “The net is tightening,” indicating that investigators are following the suspect’s trail. Despite the progress, the mayor refrained from sharing the suspect’s identity, emphasizing the importance of withholding details to prevent the killer from gaining an advantage. “Let him continue to believe he can hide behind a mask,” Adams added, underscoring the city’s commitment to bringing the individual responsible for the crime to justice.
Surveillance Footage and Clues Left Behind
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has made public several images of the suspect, including CCTV footage showing a man at a hostel with his face partially visible. Surveillance from the crime scene captured the attacker, dressed in a hooded jacket, emerging from behind a car and fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Thompson. The gunman then fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Authorities are treating the murder as a “premeditated” and “targeted” attack. Shell casings found at the scene bore cryptic markings, including the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose,” which are linked to a 2010 book about insurance companies’ tactics for avoiding claims. While the NYPD has not confirmed a motive for the murder, Thompson’s wife shared that her husband had received prior threats, raising concerns about potential ties between the killing and Thompson’s role in the health insurance industry.
