Trader Joe’s has unveiled plans to open 21 new stores across 12 U.S. states in the coming year, reinforcing its steady growth strategy and popularity among grocery shoppers. While the company hasn’t released specific opening dates, it confirmed the locations on its website and noted that at least 10 of the new outlets are expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

This latest expansion includes new stores in both urban and suburban areas, with California—home to the most Trader Joe’s locations—adding six more outlets in Northridge, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana, Tracy, and Yucaipa. Additional stores will be established in states like Alabama, Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington, broadening the brand’s national footprint.

What Drives Trader Joe’s Location Strategy?

According to Trader Joe’s marketing executives Tara Miller and Matt Sloan, the decision to open new stores is based on data-driven criteria rather than public petitions or community requests. In a past episode of the “Inside Trader Joe’s” podcast, the duo revealed that the company considers several factors when scouting new locations: population density, traffic flow, and ease of parking all play a key role in their choices.

Miller emphasized that while community enthusiasm is appreciated, the company ultimately bases its store decisions on business needs. “We’re excited when people are excited about us, but that’s really not what’s driving the decisions,” she said. Trader Joe’s also tends to avoid moving into former grocery store spaces, aiming to preserve its unique store ambiance and shopping experience.

This thoughtful, metrics-based approach ensures that each new location aligns with Trader Joe’s operational model and customer expectations, allowing the company to maintain the consistent charm and efficiency that have become synonymous with its brand.

New Store Locations Spanning Coast to Coast

The full list of upcoming Trader Joe’s stores reveals a coast-to-coast expansion effort. In the Northeast, New York will welcome new outlets in Staten Island and Glenmont, while Pennsylvania will see stores in Berwyn and Exton. Massachusetts will add a location in Boston, and New Jersey will see one in Iselin.

Moving southward, new stores are set to open in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Hoover, Alabama; and New Orleans, Louisiana. Texas will gain a store in San Antonio, and Oklahoma City will welcome one in Oklahoma.

In the Midwest and West, Colorado’s Westminster, Washington’s Bellingham, and multiple cities in California—including Los Angeles suburbs—are among the planned sites. Washington, D.C., will also gain two new stores in Friendship Heights and Brookland, further cementing Trader Joe’s presence in urban centers.

As anticipation builds, customers across the U.S. are keeping a close eye on developments to see if one of the new stores will be arriving in their neighborhood, bringing with it the brand’s beloved private-label products and vibrant shopping environment.
