On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris Reflects on policy shifts yet on why she has revised some of her stances on fracking and immigration. Speaking with CNN’s Dana Bash, Harris emphasized that her core values remain unchanged, but her role as vice president has given her new insights into some of the nation’s most urgent issues.

In the exclusive CNN interview, Harris also mentioned that she would consider appointing a Republican to her Cabinet if she were elected president. For the first time, she shared the story of President Joe Biden’s phone call informing her of his decision to drop out of the race for a second term after a poor debate performance. However, she avoided committing to any changes in Biden’s policy on arms sales to Israel.

When questioned about her racial identity and Donald Trump’s remarks that she “happened to turn Black,” Harris dismissed the comments, calling them part of the “same old, tired playbook” and quickly moved on to the next question.

This joint interview in Savannah, alongside her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, marked their first appearance together since becoming the Democratic presidential ticket. It offered a clear view of Harris’ positions and her vision for the presidency. When asked about her objectives for the first day in office, Harris focused on strengthening the economy, particularly supporting the middle class, rather than specifying any immediate actions like executive orders.

As Harris moves into the post-convention phase of the campaign, she aims to address criticisms of her record and clarify her vision for how she would govern as president. With her campaign energized by the competitiveness of the election, she’s been under pressure to provide more detailed explanations of her policy positions.

Pressed by Bash on her changing positions on fracking and decriminalizing illegal border crossings, Harris explained that while her views have evolved, her values remain consistent. “The most significant aspect of my policy decisions is that my values have not changed,” she stated, highlighting her long-standing commitment to addressing the climate crisis, even though she no longer supports the Green New Deal.

Harris had previously expressed strong support for banning fracking during a 2019 CNN town hall on climate change, but she later shifted her stance after becoming Biden’s running mate. On Thursday, she cited the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act as a significant step in combating climate change, adding that the U.S. can build a thriving clean energy economy without banning fracking.

She also pointed to her record as California attorney general, where she prosecuted cross-border trafficking gangs, as a testament to her consistent values on immigration.
