Oura has announced the release of its new Oura Ring 4, offering a refined design, improved sensor accuracy, and a broader range of sizes. Priced at $349, the latest version of the popular smart ring promises to enhance user experience through both hardware and software updates. In addition, the Oura app is getting a complete redesign to better organise the expanding list of features.
Slimmer Design and Enhanced Sensor Accuracy
While the Oura Ring 4 looks similar to the previous generation at first glance, the new model brings notable changes. One of the biggest upgrades is that it is now fully made from titanium, as opposed to the epoxy interior found in earlier versions. The ring also features a completely round shape, like the current Horizon models, eliminating the flat edge found in older versions. Another significant design tweak is the new, recessed sensor layout, which replaces the protruding dome-shaped covers, resulting in a flatter and more comfortable fit for users.
Beyond design, the Oura Ring 4 boasts improved sensor accuracy thanks to an upgraded algorithm. One of the main challenges with smart rings has been alignment issues, as rings can shift throughout the day, leading to inconsistent data collection. To address this, the new algorithm increases the number of signal pathways from 8 to 18, allowing the ring to choose the best signal at any given time. According to Oura, this results in a 120% increase in signal quality and a 30% improvement in blood oxygen tracking accuracy. Additionally, the new algorithm reduces gaps in heart rate readings by 7% during the day and 31% at night, improving overall data reliability.
Battery life is also expected to see improvements, with Oura claiming the ring can last up to eight days on a single charge, depending on its size. Larger rings tend to have longer battery life, offering users more flexibility in managing their device usage.
App Redesign and New Health Features
To complement the new hardware, the Oura app has undergone a comprehensive redesign. As the company has introduced new features like stress tracking, reproductive health tools, and heart health metrics, the app had become cluttered, prompting the need for a more streamlined interface. The new app layout is divided into three sections: Today, Vitals, and My Health. The “Today” tab provides a dynamic summary of daily biometrics tailored to the user’s health goals, while “Vitals” allows for deeper dives into specific metrics. The “My Health” tab is focused on long-term trends, helping users track their health progress over time.
In addition to the redesigned app, Oura is rolling out several new features. One of the most notable is the revamped Daytime Stress metric, which will provide real-time insights into stress levels. The app is also introducing automatic activity detection for 40 different activities and is expanding its reproductive health offerings with fertile window predictions for those trying to conceive. Oura emphasised that this feature is not intended for contraceptive use and pointed to its partnership with Natural Cycles for users seeking that functionality.
The Oura Ring 4 will be available starting October 15th, with the price tag of $349, which is a $50 increase from the previous model. However, the Oura Ring Gen 3 will still be available while supplies last, and the $6 monthly or $70 annual subscription will remain unchanged. With its new features, enhanced accuracy, and user-friendly app updates, Oura is poised to solidify its position in the health-tracking market.
