Governor’s Special Session Rejected by Lawmakers
Tensions between Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and the state’s GOP-controlled Legislature reached a boiling point on Monday when lawmakers openly defied the governor’s immigration proposals. DeSantis had called for a special session aimed at advancing an aggressive immigration agenda aligned with the former President’s policies.

In a post on social media, DeSantis argued that the proposed bill was “substantially weaker” and a “bait-and-switch tactic,” accusing lawmakers of creating the illusion of an immigration crackdown while offering little real change. In response, Albritton and Perez defended the bill, saying it was designed to work in conjunction with the president’s policies, and they condemned the governor’s criticisms as insulting to key local stakeholders such as agriculture officials and law enforcement.
Political Power Struggles Amid DeSantis’ Declining Influence
The clash signals a significant shift in Florida’s political landscape as Ron DeSantis’ influence over the Legislature wanes.
