Will Ayushman Bharat Change the Healthcare in India

The Ayushman Bharat Yojna or the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna is a health insurance scheme formulated by the government of India in 2018. This is a centrally sponsored scheme which is under the Ayushman Bharat Mission of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The aim of the mission is to intervene in primary and secondary health care and promote preventive and protective health care. The Ayushman Bharat consists of two key features-

  1. National Health Protection Scheme

This scheme will cover over 10 crore poor families and people who do not have access to health care. It is providing coverage up to 5 lakh rupees per family per year for secondary and tertiary health care. The benefits provided in this scheme are portable throughout the country.

Under this second feature of the Ayushman Bharat 1200 crore rupees were allocated to open about 1.5 lakh wellness and fitness centers. The list of services included in the Wellness Centres includes the following:

  • Pregnancy care and maternal health services
  • Neonatal and Infant health services
  • Child Health
  • Chronic Communicable diseases
  • Non-communicable diseases
  • Management of Mental Illness
  • Dental Care
  • Geriatric Care Emergency Medicine

The scheme is aimed at good health care options and opportunities to the poor people. To go by the Socio-economic Caste Census the data of 2011, almost 8.03 families in the rural sector and 2.33 crore families in the urban areas will be entitled to the scheme, which is roughly around 50 crore people. The Ayushman Bharat- National Health Protection Scheme will give a benefit of Rs. 5 lakh to each family every year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. This scheme will include the existing Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna which was launched in the year 2008 by the UPA government.

The Ayushman Bharat- National Health Protection Scheme will give a benefit of Rs. 5 lakh to each family every year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.

Various measures are taken to make sure that no one is left out, especially the women and children the capsize to the families will not be there under the AB-NHPS. The scheme is an entitlement based scheme where the entitlement will be based on the deprivation criteria from the SECC data. The criteria for the rural and urban areas are different.

The Ayushman Bharat health care scheme has given medical benefits to many people in a very short period. And it promises to upgrade the health scenario in the coming years as well. A study in 2015 by the NSSO had presented with a few alarming statistics that showed the finances of the poor families and how it interfered with their medical emergencies. There were around 80% of the households that were not covered by any health scheme. It was estimated that around 6 million families would face poverty because of medical emergencies. The Ayushman Bharat scheme targets almost 40% of the Indian households and helping them get proper health care.

Ayushman Bharat has upgraded the reach of the medical services and has promoted good health. It has changed the health care scenario in India by giving the poor and underprivileged a chance for medical treatments. Under this scheme, over 12 lakh of people availed the health treatment opportunities. Over 15,000 hospitals are impaneled under the scheme, out of which 15% of hospitals are private hospitals. The government is urging more and more hospitals to engage in this scheme so that they can provide more health care facilities to the poor and underprivileged. As it is said, healthy people are the biggest asset a country can have; Ayushman Bharat is changing the scenario of health care.
